Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6796

It is narrated from Abu Wa'il that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Hudhafah bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Who is my father? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your father is Hudhafah. The child belongs to the one on whose bed it is born, and for the fornicator is the stone (deprivation)." He said: Had you attributed me to an Abyssinian, I would have followed him too. His mother said to him: You put my honour at risk (by asking such a question). He replied: I only wanted to find peace (from that doubt).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this name has been corrupted into "bin Yasar".

Grading: This narration is "sahih li-ghayrihi", but this chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Nu'aym bin Hammad has been criticised, and the narration of Abu Wa'il (Shaqiq bin Salamah) from 'Abd Allah bin Hudhafah is "mursal". Ibn al-Barqi said: "Three hadiths are preserved from him (i.e. Ibn Hudhafah) whose connection is not sound." al-Haythami said in "Majma' al-Zawa'id" (5/ 15): "al-Tabarani narrated it, and it is mursal, and its narrators are thiqah!"
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for it is what Imam Ahmad (19/ 12044) transmitted via Humayd al-Tawil, from Anas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will not ask me about anything, up to the Day of Resurrection, but that I will tell you." 'Abd Allah bin Hudhafah asked: "O Messenger of Allah, who is my father?" He said: "Your father is Hudhafah." His mother said: "What did you intend by this?" He said: "I wanted to be at rest (from what people were saying)."
Grading: The chain of this supporting report is sahih.
Reference / Source: Imam Muslim transmitted after hadith (2359), via al-Zuhri, who said: 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Abd Allah bin 'Utbah informed me that the mother of 'Abd Allah bin Hudhafah said to him: "I have never heard of a son more undutiful than you! Did you feel safe that your mother might not have committed something of what the women of the Jahiliyyah used to commit, so that you would disgrace her before the eyes of the people?" 'Abd Allah bin Hudhafah replied: "By Allah, had he attributed me to a black slave, I would have attached myself to him."
Reference / Source: This story of 'Abd Allah bin Hudhafah's question is reported in al-Bukhari (93 and 7089) and Muslim (2359) through more than one route from Anas bin Malik, and from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari in al-Bukhari (92) and Muslim (2360).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying "The child belongs to the bed, and for the fornicator is the stone" a supporting report is the narration of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), which is in al-Bukhari (2218) and Muslim (1457).
