Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6785

Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrates from his father that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in Quba' with a few people when Sayyiduna Mus'ab bin Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) appeared, wearing a cloak that barely covered his body. The people lowered their heads (on seeing his poverty). He came and gave the greeting of peace, and the people returned his greeting. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke well of him and praised him, and then said: "I saw him in Makkah with his parents, where they kept him in great honour and luxury, and there was no young man of Quraysh like him (in handsomeness and comfort). Then he left all of that and set out solely for the pleasure of Allah and the support of His Messenger. Remember! A time will come upon you when Persia and Rome will be conquered; one of you will wear one garment in the morning and another in the evening, and bowls (of fine food) will be brought before you morning and evening." The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah! Will we be better on that day or today? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, you are better today than on those (coming) days; for if you knew of the world what I know, your souls would turn away from it in weariness."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This narration is "hasan li-ghayrihi", but this particular chain is weak on account of Musa bin 'Ubaydah al-Rabadhi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): With the other scholars who narrated it, this narration is a "mursal of 'Urwah", without mention of his father al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: al-Mu'afa bin 'Imran in "al-Zuhd" (211), Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-Zuhd" (507), "Dhamm al-Dunya" (428) and "al-Awliya'" (78), Ibn Sam'un al-Wa'iz in "al-Amali" (158) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (9846 and 9847) narrated it, in full and in abridged form, through various routes from Zayd bin al-Hubab, with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the hadith of 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), which is in Sunan al-Tirmidhi (2476) and elsewhere.
Grading: Its chain is hasan in the context of corroborations and supporting reports, and Imam al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for the story of Mus'ab bin 'Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) is the "mursal" narration of Ibrahim bin Muhammad al-'Abdari from his father, which has already passed at hadith number (4965), though its chain is weak.
Note / Clarification: See the hadith of Talhah al-Nasri (may Allah be pleased with him) that has passed at number (4336), where we mentioned the other hadiths of this chapter.
