Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Suwayd bin Sa'id (who is himself weak) narrated it with the chain of Sulayman al-Qafilani, from 'Asim al-Jahdari, from Abu Qilabah, whereas what is known is that it is the narration of Khalid al-Hadhdha' from Abu Qilabah, as will be explained. About Sulayman al-Qafilani, Yahya bin Ma'in (as in "al-Jarh wa-l-Ta'dil" 4/ 140) and Imam Ahmad (as in "al-'Ilal" 1681) said that he is "nothing" (laysa bi-shay'). Abu al-Muthanna is Mu'adh bin al-Muthanna bin Mu'adh al-'Anbari.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (19/ 643), and via him Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (2146), with the chain of Mu'adh bin al-Muthanna, from Suwayd bin Sa'id, from 'Ubayd bin 'Aqil al-Muqri'. In both of them the wording is "aqra'a abahu" (he taught his father to recite), but in the printed edition of al-Tabarani it has been corrupted into "aqra'nahu" (we taught him to recite).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Nu'aym said after it that Suwayd narrated it like this, saying "from 'Asim", whereas 'Ubayd Allah bin Musa narrated it with the chain of Sulayman al-Khuzi, from Khalid al-Hadhdha', from Abu Qilabah.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym (2147), Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis in "al-Mukhallisiyyat" (1011) and Ibn Mandah in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (p. 422) narrated it via 'Ubayd Allah bin Musa (who is thiqah), from Sulayman al-Khuzi, from Khalid al-Hadhdha', from Abu Qilabah, from Malik bin al-Huwayrith: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited "fa-yawma'idhin la yu'adhdhabu 'adhabahu ahadun wa la yuthaqu" (al-Fajr 89: 25-26).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Daraqutni in "al-'Ilal" (3424) held that al-Qafilani and al-Khuzi are one and the same person, whereas al-Bukhari, Ibn Abi Hatim and Ibn Hibban each counted them as two separate men. We say: if he is al-Qafilani, then it has already been stated that he is weak; and if he is someone else, then he is "majhul" (unknown), since no one other than 'Ubayd Allah bin Musa narrated from him. al-'Uqayli says: "There is error (wahm) in his hadith, and he is not corroborated in his hadith."
Note / Clarification: Abu Nu'aym further said that 'Ubayd bin 'Aqil narrated it from Sulayman in the same way, from Khalid (al-Hadhdha'), but did not mention "his father" (abahu).
Reference / Source: Then Abu Nu'aym narrated it (2148) via Rawh bin 'Abd al-Mu'min (who is thiqah), from 'Ubayd bin 'Aqil, from Sulayman al-Qafilani, from Khalid al-Hadhdha', from Abu Qilabah, from Malik bin al-Huwayrith: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the verse "fa-yawma'idhin la yu'adhdhabu 'adhabahu ahadun wa la yuthaqu" (al-Fajr 89: 25-26, in the reading with the passive voice: "on that Day no one will be punished as he is punished, nor bound as he is bound").
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Nu'aym says that more than one narrator narrated it from Khalid (al-Hadhdha'), from Abu Qilabah, from someone who heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), without mentioning Malik bin al-Huwayrith or his father, and this is the well-known version. Imam Ibn Mandah said: "This is the correct one", meaning that this narration is the "mahfuz" (preserved) one; so the hadith goes back to Khalid al-Hadhdha'.
Reference / Source: This narration has already passed with the author (al-Hakim) at hadith number (3046), where we discussed it in detail.
