Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik narrates from his brother Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about a stray animal that comes to his watering trough: would he receive a reward for quenching its thirst? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is a reward in quenching the thirst of every thirsty living being (that has a liver)."

Grading: The original hadith is "sahih", but this chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator Hassan bin Ghalib (al-Misri) is weak and munkar al-hadith (although Ibn Yunus declared him thiqah), and his teacher Ibn Lahi'ah is "sayyi' al-hifz" (of poor memory). A further defect in this weak chain is that al-Zuhri's teacher is named "Abd Allah bin Ka'b bin Malik", whereas the students of Ibn Ishaq called him "Abd al-Rahman bin Malik".
Note / Clarification: Ibn Ishaq explicitly stated that he heard from al-Zuhri in Ibn Hisham's "al-Sirah", but there is disagreement over Imam al-Zuhri himself regarding this chain, the details of which will come.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (6600) via Yahya bin Uthman bin Salih, with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Among the students of Ibn Ishaq who transmitted this narration correctly are Yazid bin Harun (Musnad Ahmad: 17584), Abd Allah bin Numayr (Ibn Majah: 3686), Ya'la bin Ubayd (Musnad Ahmad: 17581), Yahya bin Sa'id al-Umawi and Sadaqah bin Sabiq (Mu'jam al-Sahabah: 1200), and others.
Important point: All of them narrated it from Ibn Ishaq, from al-Zuhri, from Abd al-Rahman bin Malik bin Ju'shum, from his father (Malik), from his paternal uncle Suraqah bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for the disagreement among those narrating this from Imam al-Zuhri, the details are as follows:
Reference / Source: Musa bin Uqbah narrated it, as recorded by Ibn Abi Asim, al-Baghawi and al-Tabarani (6602), with the chain al-Zuhri, from Abd al-Rahman bin Malik, from his father, from his brother Suraqah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sufyan bin Uyaynah narrated it, as recorded by al-Humaydi (926), from al-Zuhri, from Ibn Suraqah or the nephew of Suraqah, from Suraqah. Sufyan says that al-Zuhri's narration and what Wa'il bin Dawud told him became mixed up for him, so he cannot separate al-Zuhri's words.
Note / Clarification: Ibn Suraqah is "Muhammad bin Suraqah", who narrates from his father. According to al-Ayni no biography of him could be found; hence he is "majhul".
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tahawi recorded it in "Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar" (4/ 134) with the chain Abd al-Razzaq, from Sufyan bin Uyaynah, from Wa'il bin Dawud, from al-Zuhri, from Muhammad bin Suraqah, from his father Suraqah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Salih bin Kaysan narrated it in Musnad Ahmad (17587) with the chain al-Zuhri, from Abd al-Rahman bin Malik, directly from Suraqah, i.e. without mentioning any intermediary.
Note / Clarification: The same is the case in the next narration (6745), where in the chain of Abd al-Rahman bin Ishaq from al-Zuhri there is no intermediary between Abd al-Rahman and Suraqah; its takhrij will come there.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ma'mar narrated it in his "Jami'" with the chain al-Zuhri, from Urwah bin al-Zubayr, from Suraqah.
Grading: Urwah did not hear from Suraqah (may Allah be pleased with him), so this link is disconnected (munqati').
Reference / Source: Through this same route it was also recorded by Imam Ahmad, al-Baghawi, al-Tabarani, Abu Nu'aym and al-Bayhaqi.
Reference / Source: Yunus bin Yazid al-Ayli narrated it, as recorded by al-Khara'iti and Ibn Hibban (542), from al-Zuhri, who said: "I was told on the authority of Mahmud bin al-Rabi'" that Suraqah bin Ju'shum said this; in Ibn Hibban's narration it is "from Mahmud bin al-Rabi'".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This hadith is also supported by the narration of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) found in al-Bukhari (2363) and Muslim (2244).
Note / Clarification: Explaining the words "kabid harra", Ibn al-Athir says that "harra" refers to a liver burning from intense thirst. The meaning is that there is reward in giving water to every living creature exhausted by intense thirst.
Important point: What is meant is (the life of) every living being (animal or human), keeping it alive and quenching its thirst.
