It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mujashi' bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: After the Conquest of Makkah, I brought my brother Mujalid to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have brought my brother Mujalid to you so that you may take his pledge of allegiance for hijrah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people of hijrah have gone away with its merit." I said: "Then, O Messenger of Allah, on what will you take his pledge?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I take his pledge on Islam, faith and jihad."

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this name was mistakenly written as "Khalid" (which is a corruption).
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Note / Clarification: Abu Ghassan is Malik bin Isma'il bin Dirham al-Nahdi, and Abu Uthman al-Nahdi is Abd al-Rahman bin Mall bin Amr. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad recorded it 25/ (15851) from Ahmad bin Abd al-Malik, and Imam al-Bukhari (4305) from Amr bin Khalid; both of them narrate it from Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah with this same chain. Details of the narration: However, this narration has the words: "I came with my brother Ma'bad". Furthermore, both of them additionally cite the statement of Abu Uthman al-Nahdi: "I later met Ma'bad (who was the elder of the two brothers) and asked him, and he said: Mujashi' has spoken the truth." Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (25/ 15848), al-Bukhari (2962, 4307) and Muslim (1863) recorded it through various routes from Asim al-Ahwal. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In some narrations the person who was brought is named "Ma'bad" and in some "Abu Ma'bad". In Imam Muslim's first narration (from Isma'il bin Zakariyya from Asim al-Ahwal), it is Mujashi' alone who came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to pledge allegiance (with no mention of his brother)! Imam al-Daraqutni preferred the name "Abu Ma'bad" in "al-Ilal" (3388), while Ibn Abi Khaythamah in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" 2/ 661 made it the kunyah of Mujalid. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (25/ 15850, 34/ 20684) and al-Bukhari (3078) recorded it via Khalid al-Hadhdha' from Abu Uthman al-Nahdi, but here the brother who was brought is named "Mujalid bin Mas'ud". Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad recorded 25/ (15847, 15849) via Yahya bin Ishaq from Mujashi' bin Mas'ud that he brought his nephew to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to pledge allegiance for hijrah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather he pledges allegiance upon Islam; for there is no hijrah after the Conquest (of Makkah), and he will be among those who follow (with sincerity) in excellence."
