It is narrated from Urwah bin al-Zubayr that when the people set out for Hajj in the year 9 AH, Urwah bin Mas'ud al-Thaqafi, the paternal uncle of Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah, came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as a Muslim. He asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to return to his people. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I fear that they will kill you." He said: If they found me asleep, they would not wake me (that is, they honour me so much). So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission. He reached his people as a Muslim. At the time of Isha the people of Thaqif came to him, and he invited them to Islam. The people accused him, disobeyed him and made him hear things he had not expected. Then those people left him, until, when the time of suhur came and dawn broke, Urwah stood up in his house, called the adhan for the prayer and proclaimed the two testimonies of faith. Then a man of Thaqif shot him with an arrow and martyred him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of Urwah is like that of the man of Ya-Sin; he called his people to Allah Almighty, and they killed him."

Grading: This hadith is hasan. Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators of this chain are thiqah except Abd Allah bin Lahi'ah, who was declared weak because of his poor memory; however, the scholars accepted the narrations of the "Abadilah" (such as Ibn al-Mubarak and Ibn Wahb) from him, and one of them, Abd Allah bin Wahb, has narrated it from him, as will come. Technical note / Defect ('illah): This narration of Urwah bin al-Zubayr is "mursal", but the report has come through other mursal routes which strengthen one another. Abu al-Aswad is Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Nawfal al-Asadi, known by the title "Yatim Urwah" (Urwah's orphan). Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 5/ 299 via al-Hakim al-Naysaburi with this same chain, but did not cite its wording there. Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" 17/ (374) via Abu Ulathah Muhammad bin Amr. Reference / Source: Ibn Shabbah recorded it in "Tarikh al-Madinah" 2/ 471 with the chain Ibrahim bin al-Mundhir al-Hizami, from Abd Allah bin Wahb, from Ibn Lahi'ah. Reference / Source: A similar narration was reported by Ibn Shabbah (2/ 469 - 470), al-Tabarani (17/ 375) and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (5486) via Muhammad bin Fulayh, from Musa bin Uqbah, from Imam al-Zuhri (Muhammad bin Muslim), as "mursal" or "mu'dal". Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Dala'il" 5/ 299 - 300 via Isma'il bin Ibrahim bin Uqbah, from his uncle Musa bin Uqbah, without mentioning Imam al-Zuhri. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this chain Isma'il bin Abi Uways is "layyin al-hadith" (weak), while Muhammad bin Fulayh is a stronger narrator than him. Reference / Source: Abu Ya'la recorded (1598) via Hammad bin Salamah from Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an the story of Urwah bin Mas'ud al-Thaqafi as "mursal" or "mu'dal". Grading: Although Ali bin Zayd is weak, his narration can be adduced in support among corroborating chains and supporting reports. Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim cited this narration in his "Tafsir" (as mentioned in "Tafsir Ibn Kathir" under Surah Ya Sin) via Hisham bin Ubayd Allah al-Razi, from Muhammad bin Jabir bin Sayyar, from Abd al-Malik bin Umayr, that Urwah bin Mas'ud al-Thaqafi said; he narrated it as mursal or mu'dal. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hisham bin Ubayd Allah and his shaykh Muhammad bin Jabir are both narrators who have been criticised (mutakallam fihi) by the imams of jarh and ta'dil. Reference / Source: Umar bin Shabbah recorded it 2/ 470 - 471 via Ibrahim al-Hizami, from Abd Allah bin Wahb, from al-Layth bin Sa'd, as "mu'dal" (a chain from which two or more narrators have dropped).
