It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that we were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when the delegation of Banu Tamim came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), among whom were Qays bin Asim, Amr bin al-Ahtam and al-Zibriqan bin Badr. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Amr bin al-Ahtam: "What do you say about al-Zibriqan bin Badr?" He said: O Messenger of Allah! He is obeyed (one whose command is followed) among those close to him, he is eloquent of tongue, and he is the protector of his tribe. Al-Zibriqan said: O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, he knows far more about me than what he has stated, but he kept silent purely out of envy. At this Amr said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah! He is devoid of manliness, narrow-hearted, his maternal relatives are base and his father is a fool. By Allah, I did not lie at first, and now I have spoken the truth. But when I was pleased, I said the best thing I knew, and when I was displeased, I said the worst thing I knew. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, some eloquent speech is like magic (in its effect), and indeed, some poetry is pure wisdom."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (S) and (M) this word was corrupted to "innahu adbara", in manuscript (B) to "innahu idha amara", and in al-Tabarani's "al-Awsat" to "innahu la-zamin". Note / Clarification: The correct word is the one we have retained in the text, namely "zamir"; in Arabic "rajul zamir al-muru'ah" refers to a person whose chivalry (muru'ah) is very little. It derives from "zamira al-shay'", meaning for something to be little.
Grading: This part of the hadith, "Indeed some eloquence is magic and indeed some poetry is wisdom", is "sahih li-ghayrihi" on the basis of its supporting narrations, as we have already explained. Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, this particular chain is "da'if" because of Sa'id bin Sulayman al-Nashiti; besides his weakness, he was contradicted regarding its being "mawsul" (connected with a full chain), and its being "mursal" is more correct. Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Awsat" (7671) via al-Hasan bin Kathir al-Yamami from Sa'id bin Sulayman, with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In al-Baladhuri's "Ansab al-Ashraf" 12/ 271, Maslamah bin Muharib al-Ziyadi contradicted Sa'id bin Sulayman: he narrated it via Uyaynah bin Abd al-Rahman from his father, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Amr bin al-Ahtam, as "mursal" (without the link of the Companion). Important point: This Maslamah was mentioned by Imam al-Bukhari in "al-Kabir" and by Ibn Abi Hatim, both of whom remained silent about him; however, several narrators narrated from him and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", so his condition is better than that of al-Nashiti. Grading: This chain is wahin (extremely weak). Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Awsat" (8304) via Bakkar bin Abd al-Aziz bin Abi Bakrah, from his father, from Abu Bakrah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed there is wisdom in some poetry." Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tabarani says that only al-Nadr bin Tahir narrated it from Bakkar. We say: al-Nadr bin Tahir is accused of "stealing hadith" (narrating others' hadiths with his own chain), so this chain is worthless. Note / Clarification: The word "adnayhi" refers to the people who are near to him or closely related to him. Note / Clarification: His words "shadid al-aridah" mean: a person very firm in speech, eloquent, strong and of firm resolve.
