Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6705

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salman bin Amir al-Dabbi (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! My father used to maintain the ties of kinship, honour guests and fulfil covenants." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did he not live to see the era of Islam?" I said: No. He says: When I turned to go back, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call that elder to me." Then he said to me: "Its effect will remain in your children and descendants; they will never be humiliated, never be disgraced, and never be in need."
After this is the honourable mention of Sayyiduna Sa'sa'ah bin Najiyah al-Mujashi'i (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Important point: In the preceding chain, the one who says "haddathana" there is Khalifah bin Khayyat.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts and in al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" the name was inverted to "Bashir bin Abd al-Aziz", whereas the correct name is "Abd al-Aziz bin Bashir", as stated in the books on narrators.

Grading: Its chain has some weakness (lin).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd al-Aziz bin Bashir al-Dabbi is a "majhul" (unknown) narrator; Abu Na'amah Amr bin Isa al-Adawi is alone in narrating from him. Imam Ali bin al-Madini, Ibn Abi Hatim and al-Mizzi erred in attributing him as "Adawi", whereas the correct attribution is indeed "Dabbi", as found with Imam Abu Dawud.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): No son of Bashir bin Ka'b al-Adawi is known who narrates from him; that is why Imam al-Bukhari and Ibn Hibban did not describe him as "Adawi". Nor did any of the imams who recorded the hadith call him a son of "Ka'b" or "Adawi"; rather, all of them called him "Dabbi".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Abd al-Aziz is corroborated by a group of men and women whose names are not explicitly mentioned.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Imam al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (4/ 136), Ya'qub al-Fasawi (1/ 321), al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, Ibn Abi Asim (1135), Imam al-Tahawi (4362), al-Tabarani (6213) and Abu Nu'aym (3360) through various routes from Abu Asim al-Dahhak bin Makhlad, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi recorded it in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (1091) via Zuhayr bin Hunayd, from Abu Na'amah, from elders of his tribe and some of his maternal aunts, from Salman bin Amir al-Dabbi (who was his maternal grandfather).
Details of the narration: Banu Tuhayyah appealed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) against Salman, claiming that he had raided them after the coming of Islam. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him, Salman said that he had raided them in the Jahiliyyah and had accepted Islam while holding the property. He (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered: "Look at the property (the livestock); if they are 'mukhadram' (marked by clipped ears), they belong to Salman, otherwise they belong to Banu Tuhayyah." They turned out to be marked, so Salman took possession of them. Then Salman asked about the good deeds of his polytheist father (hospitality, keeping pledges), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said that they would not benefit him, but their blessing would remain in his descendants: they would never be disgraced, humiliated or needy.
Grading: Al-Baghawi says this hadith is gharib and is narrated only through this route.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the narration both Zuhayr and Abu Na'amah are attributed as "Sa'di", whereas what is well known is that both of them are "Adawi".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Support for the point that good deeds do not benefit a person in the state of disbelief comes from the hadith of A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), which is in Sahih Muslim (214) and has already passed under number (3566).
Reference / Source: The same meaning is also supported by the hadith of Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him), found with Imam Ahmad 30/ (18262) and Ibn Hibban (332).
