Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6695

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Safinah (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said: I was travelling on the sea when my ship broke apart. I climbed onto one of its planks, and that plank cast me into a thicket where a lion lived. The lion came towards me, and I said: "O Abu al-Harith (the lion's kunyah)! I am the slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." At that it lowered its head and came towards me; it pushed me with its shoulder, brought me out of the thicket and set me on the road. Then it growled softly; I think it was bidding me farewell. That was my last encounter with it.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. (After this) is the mention of Sayyiduna Ziyad bin Labid al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him).

Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (6432) - and from him Abu Nu'aym transmitted it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (3511) - through the route of Ahmad bin Salih. Also al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/ 45) through the route of Yusuf bin 'Adi; both of them narrate it from 'Abd Allah bin Wahb with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/ 45) and in his book "al-I'tiqad" (p. 316) through the route of Ja'far bin 'Awn, from Usamah bin Zayd, by this same chain.
Note / Clarification: The word "ajamah" mentioned in the hadith refers to a place with many trees (a dense thicket).
