Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6686

Kathir bin Abdullah al-Muzani narrates from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) marked out the trench in the year of the Battle of the Confederates (al-Ahzab) until it reached the place called al-Madhahij. He allotted forty cubits to every ten men. At this the Muhajirun said, "Salman is one of us," and the Ansar said, "Salman is one of us." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Salman is one of us, the People of the House."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This word appears like this (al-Mazad) in the manuscripts, but our strong assumption is that it is a corruption of "al-Madhad" (with dhal);
Reference / Source: because Yaqut al-Hamawi quoted Ibn al-A'rabi in "Mu'jam al-Buldan" 5/ 88 as saying that it is the place in Madinah where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dug the Trench, and a verse of Ka'b bin Malik also supports this.
Note / Clarification: (Translation of Ka'b bin Malik's verse: "Let him come to a lions' den where swords are drawn, between al-Mazad and the bend of the Trench").
Reference / Source: Abu 'Ubayd al-Bakri stated the same in "Mu'jam ma Ista'jam" 4/ 1202.

Grading: Its chain is very weak (da'if jiddan).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Kathir bin 'Abd Allah (Kathir bin 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr bin 'Awf al-Muzani) is a matruk (abandoned) and accused (muttaham, suspected of lying) narrator; according to Ibn Hibban he narrated from his father from his grandfather a fabricated (mawdu') collection which it is not permissible to mention in books except by way of astonishment. Imam al-Dhahabi also declared it weak in "al-Talkhis" for this reason. His father 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr was narrated from by no one except his son Kathir, so he is "majhul al-hal" (of unknown condition). Ibn Abi Fudayk is Isma'il bin Muslim al-Madani.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (6040) through the chain of Ibrahim bin al-Mundhir al-Hizami.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd recorded it in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" 4/ 76 and 9/ 320, Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 21/ 408, and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (3347) and "Akhbar Asbahan" 1/ 54 through the route of Duhaym.
Important point: Ibn Sa'd and Duhaym both narrate it from Isma'il bin Abi Fudayk; however, the name of Duhaym has dropped out of the printed edition of "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah".
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabari recorded it in his "Tafsir" 21/ 133-134, Abu al-Shaykh in "Tabaqat al-Muhaddithin bi-Asbahan" (6) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Dala'il" 3/ 418-420 through the chain of Muhammad bin Khalid bin 'Athmah from Kathir bin 'Abd Allah, in both long and short forms.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there are also narrations from Anas, al-Husayn bin 'Ali and Zayd bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with them), but their chains are not reliable.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narration of Anas was narrated by Ja'far bin Sulayman al-Duba'i through al-Nadr bin Humayd al-Kindi.
Reference / Source: This narration is in Musnad al-Bazzar (6534).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Nadr bin Humayd and Sa'd al-Iskaf are both "matruk al-hadith" (very weak) narrators.
Reference / Source: The narration of al-Husayn is with Abu Ya'la in his Musnad (6772) and Abu al-Shaykh (5); its chain too is discarded like the previous chain (because of al-Nadr and Sa'd).
Grading: This narration is "mawdu'" (fabricated).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the versions of Ibn Abi 'Asim, al-Tabarani, Ibn 'Adi and Abu Nu'aym, its chain contains the words "a man from Quraysh", who is unknown.
Important point: According to Imam al-Bukhari, this chain is unknown, it has no corroboration, and the narrators are not known to have heard from one another. Abu Hatim called it "munkar" and its narrators "majhul". According to Imam al-Dhahabi, the narrator named Zayd is found only in this fabricated hadith. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in "Lisan al-Mizan" declared both Ibrahim bin Bishr al-Azdi and his shaykh unknown.
Reference / Source: Al-Dhahabi explicitly declared it "mawdu'" in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" 1/ 141.
Important point: This report is also narrated through various routes as the words of 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) himself (mawquf), each of which has some criticism, but taken together it can be graded "hasan".
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (2/ 298) and Ibn Abi Shaybah (12/ 148) recorded it through the chain of Abu al-Bakhtari, that 'Ali said: "Salman attained the first knowledge and the last knowledge; he is an ocean whose depths cannot be reached; he is one of us, the People of the House".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Bakhtari (Sa'id bin Fayruz) is thiqah, but he is not established to have heard from 'Ali, so the chain is munqati' (broken).
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (6041) through the route of 'Ali bin 'Abis.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is weak because of 'Ali bin 'Abis, and the narration of 'Amr bin Murrah from 'Ali is "mursal" (disconnected).
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tabarani (6042) and Abu Nu'aym (al-Hilyah 1/ 187 and "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (3349)) through the chain of Hibban bin 'Ali al-'Anazi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is weak because of Hibban bin 'Ali; moreover, the second chain contains an "unnamed" (mubham) narrator.
Reference / Source: For its defect, see "'Ilal al-Daraqutni" (366).
