It is narrated from Ishaq bin Uthman that he said: I asked Musa bin Anas: How many military expeditions did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) undertake in all? He said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) undertook twenty-three expeditions, eight of which were ones in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) would stay for several months. I asked: In how many expeditions did Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) take part with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: In eight expeditions.

Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The mention here of "twenty-three (23) expeditions" is an error (wahm) by one of the narrators below Musa bin Isma'il al-Tabudhaki. Imam al-Bukhari narrated it from him with this same chain in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (1/ 398) with "twenty-seven (27) expeditions", and that is the preserved and correct version. Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (5/ 641) by way of Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal, from Abu Sa'id the client of Banu Hashim ('Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd Allah al-Basri), from Ishaq bin 'Uthman al-Kilabi, from Musa bin Anas, and in it too "twenty-seven (27) expeditions" is mentioned. Important point: The number of twenty-seven expeditions is what the experts in the military expeditions and the Sirah (Musa bin 'Uqbah, Ibn Ishaq, al-Waqidi and others) agree upon.
