Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6597

It is narrated from al-A'mash that Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Abd al-Malik bin Marwan: "O Commander of the Believers! I served the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for ten years, and al-Hajjaj regards me as one of the common weavers of Basrah." So Abd al-Malik said to his scribe: Write to al-Hajjaj. And he sent him this message: "Woe to you! I fear that no good will remain at your hands. When this letter of mine reaches you, stand up at once and apologize to Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him)."

Grading: The chain up to al-A'mash is "hasan", because of Abu Bakr bin 'Ayyash.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It is not established that al-A'mash heard directly (sama') from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir narrated it in "Tarikh Dimashq" (9/ 373) through Abu Sa'id, from Ziyad bin Ayyub alone, with this chain.
Note / Clarification: "Al-hawakah" is the plural of "ha'ik", meaning one who weaves cloth (a weaver). "Al-hawakah" is an irregular plural, while the regular plural of "ha'ik" is "hakah".
