Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6506

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) fixed the stipend of Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both) at three thousand and mine at two thousand five hundred, I said to him: "Father! Why have you set Usamah's stipend at three thousand and mine at two thousand five hundred? By Allah, Usamah has not taken part in any battle from which I was absent, nor did his father go anywhere my father did not take part in." He replied: "My son, you have spoken the truth, but I bear witness that Usamah's father was dearer to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) than your father, and Usamah himself was dearer to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) than you."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. If anyone thinks that this virtue belongs only to Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him), let him know that I have cited this hadith for two reasons. First, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) testified in favour of his son that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was present in every battle Usamah went to, and this is a very great virtue of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). Second, the two Shaykhs have already recorded, on their condition, most of the musnad hadiths on the virtues of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), so my effort is to present the sahih musnad narrations which they did not record.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This report is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain has some weakness (lin); the condition of 'Abd Allah bin Ishaq bin al-Fadl and his father is unknown. Imam al-'Uqayli mentioned 'Abd Allah in "al-Du'afa'" (2/ 305) and said that he has hadiths in which he is not corroborated in any of them. We say: nevertheless, this report is also narrated through other routes.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban narrated it (7043) via 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Darawardi, from 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Umar, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
Grading: This chain is strong (qawi).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tirmidhi (3813) transmitted a narration of similar meaning via Ibn Jurayj, from Zayd bin Aslam, from his father Aslam (mawla of 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)), that: "'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) allotted …", and Imam al-Tirmidhi declared it "hasan".
