Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6490

Al-A'mash relates that he heard al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf saying: "I am amazed at the slave of Hudhayl (meaning Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud), who claims that he recites a Qur'an revealed from Allah, whereas, by Allah, it is nothing but rajaz verse of the Bedouins. By Allah, had I found Ibn Mas'ud, I would have struck off his head." (Imam al-Hakim says:) Al-Hajjaj uttered these insolent words after the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them), and he regretted that he could not martyr Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) (because he had died earlier). May Allah Almighty be pleased with all of these Abadilah (the eminent Companions named Abdullah), and may He curse those who hate them or abandon them.
Mention of the virtues of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with them both)

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The chain of this narration is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is graded hasan on account of the presence of Ahmad bin 'Abd al-Jabbar and Abu Bakr bin 'Ayyash.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya narrated this report in his book "al-Ishraf fi Manazil al-Ashraf" (no. 63) from Wasil bin 'Abd al-A'la al-Asadi, from Abu Bakr bin 'Ayyash, from 'Asim bin Abi al-Nujud and al-A'mash (Sulayman bin Mihran); both of them heard al-Hajjaj saying this.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Dhahabi, after quoting this account in "Tarikh al-Islam" (2/ 1074), said:
Note / Clarification: May Allah fight al-Hajjaj, how bold he was against Allah! How could he say such a thing about the righteous servant 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)?
Reference / Source: Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir said in "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah" (12/ 533 - 534):
Important point: This is an example of the audacity of al-Hajjaj (may Allah disgrace him), and of his readiness for foul speech and the shedding of unlawful blood. Al-Hajjaj resented the reading of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) only because it differed from the reading of the "Imam Mushaf" upon which 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) had united the people. What appears to be the case is that Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) later returned to the position of 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and agreed with him. And Allah knows best.
