It is narrated from Ibn Abi Mulaykah that Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) was mentioned in the presence of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he said: He was most chaste in Islam and a reciter of the Qur'an. His father was al-Zubayr, his mother Asma, his maternal grandfather Abu Bakr, his paternal aunt Khadijah, his paternal grandmother Safiyyah and his maternal aunt Aishah (may Allah be pleased with them). By Allah, I held myself to account in his matter more than I did even for Abu Bakr and Umar, but he deliberately preferred the Humaydat, the Usamat and the Tuwaytat (that is, particular people of his own family) over me. Abu Ali al-Qabbani says: By the Humaydat is meant Humayd bin Zuhayr, and by the Tuwaytat the family of Tuwayt bin Habib, who belonged to Banu Asad.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Manuscripts (S, M, B) have "qari'an Allah" with a blank space in between. Imam al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis" has "qanitan lillah"; however, on the basis of the other sources of takhrij we have established the word "lil-Qur'an" here.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here Sufyan refers to "Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah". Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 334-335) and "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (4137) through Abu al-'Abbas al-Sarraj, via Muhammad bin al-Sabbah and Muhammad bin Maymun, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari narrated it in abridged form (4664) from 'Abd Allah bin Muhammad, and in detail (4665) via Hajjaj bin Muhammad from Ibn Jurayj. At number (4666) it is also narrated through 'Umar bin Sa'id.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This refers to the same "al-Husayn bin Muhammad bin Ziyad" who is mentioned above in the chain.
