Mustadrak al-Hakim 6451 — The clothing of Abdullah bin Abbas

Ikrimah narrates: I saw Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) wearing a costly silk wrap (mitraf) woven in Harran, with patterns on it, and he had bought it for a thousand (dirhams or dinars).

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this phrase is written like "al-mansub al-Harrani bi-mazalif", whose meaning could not be made clear. Our view is that this phrase is a corrupted repetition of "al-mitraf min al-khazz wa ya'khudhuhu bi-alf"; this is why Imam al-Dhahabi did not mention it in his "Talkhis".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators above al-Waqidi are "la ba'sa bihim" (acceptable). 'Abd Allah bin Ja'far refers to Ibn 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Miswar al-Zuhri.

Reference / Source: al-Bayhaqi transmitted in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (5804) through Malik bin Dinar from 'Ikrimah that Ibn 'Abbas used to wear "khazz" and would say: "Only pure silk (musmat) is disliked."
General principle: "Musmat" refers to cloth made entirely of silk.
Note / Clarification: "Mitraf" is a wrap made of khazz with markings (embroidered patterns) on its edges. "Khazz" is a cloth made from a blend of wool and silk.
