كَانَ لِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ لِسَانًا سَئُولًا وَقَلْبًا عَقُولًا .

أخبرني أبو عبد الله محمد بن علي الصَّنعاني بمكة حَرَسها الله تعالى، حدثنا إسحاق بن إبراهيم، أخبرنا عبد الرزاق، أخبرنا معمر، عن الزُّهْري قال: قال المهاجرون لعمر بن الخطّاب: ادْعُ أبناءَنا كما تدعو ابنَ عبّاس، قال: ذاكُم فتى الكهول، إنَّ له لسانًا سئوولًا، وقلبًا عَقُولًا (2).

Imam al-Zuhri states that the Muhajirun said to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): "Invite our sons (to the gathering) as you invite Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both)." He said: "He is a youth with the maturity of the middle-aged; he has a tongue that asks much and a heart that understands well."

(2) رجاله ثقات وهو منقطع، فالزهري لم يدرك عمر.
Grading: All its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), but this chain is "munqati'" (broken), since Imam al-Zuhri did not live in the time of 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
وهو في "جامع معمر" برواية عبد الرزاق برقم (20428)، ومن طريق عبد الرزاق أخرجه أحمد في "فضائل الصحابة" (1555)، والبيهي في "المدخل إلى السنن" (426).
Reference / Source: This narration is in "Jami' Ma'mar" (number 20428) in the transmission of 'Abd al-Razzaq, and through his route Imam Ahmad (Fada'il al-Sahabah: 1555) and al-Bayhaqi (al-Madkhal: 426) transmitted it.
والكهل من الرجال: مَن سنُّه في حدود الثلاثين أو جاوزها.
Note / Clarification: Among men, "kahl" is the term for one whose age is around thirty or has passed it.
