Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6301

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) promised us the expedition to India. So if I am martyred in it, I will be among the best of the martyrs, and if I return (alive), then I will be Abu Hurayrah the freed one (freed from the Fire of Hell).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Through its routes and supporting reports, this narration may possibly be graded "hasan"; however, this particular chain has some weakness ("lin").
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sayyar Abu al-Hakam is alone in narrating from Jabr bin 'Ubaydah, and no one other than Ibn Hibban (who is known for declaring unknown narrators trustworthy) declared him thiqah. 'Allamah al-Dhahabi called it "munkar" and the narrator unknown.
Reference / Source: This narration is in "Musnad Ahmad" (12/ 7128).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i (4367, 4368) narrated it through two routes from Hushaym with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i (4367) also narrated it through the route of Zakariyya bin 'Adi, from 'Ubayd Allah al-Raqqi, from Zayd bin Abi Unaysah, from Sayyar.
Grading: This chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is the weakness of al-Bara' bin 'Abd Allah and the fact that al-Hasan al-Basri did not hear directly from Abu Hurayrah ("inqita'").
Reference / Source: A third route of it is in Ibn Abi 'Asim's book "al-Jihad" (291), and it is weak.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the marfu' narration of Thawban (Ahmad: 22396, al-Nasa'i: 4369), whose wording is: "Two groups of my Ummah Allah has protected from the Fire: a group that will campaign against India (al-Hind), and a group that will be with 'Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him)." This narration may possibly be graded "hasan".
