حدَّثَناه (1) إبراهيم بن بِسْطامَ الزَّعفَراني، حَدَّثَنَا سعيد بن سفيان الجَحْدَري، حَدَّثَنَا شُعبة، عن أشعثَ بن أبي الشَّعثاء قال: سمعت أَبي يحدِّث قال: قَدِمتُ المدينةَ فإذا أبو أيوب يحدِّث عن أبي هريرة، فقلت: تحدِّثُ عن أبي هريرة وأنت صاحبُ مَنزِلةِ (2) رسول الله؟! فقال: لأَنْ أحدِّثَ عن أبي هريرة أحبُّ إليَّ من أن أحدِّثَ عن النَّبِيّ ﷺ (3). قال الإمام أبو بكر: فمِن حِرْصِ أبي هريرة على العِلم روايتُه عمَّن كان أقلَّ روايةً عن النَّبِيّ ﷺ منه، حرصًا على العلم، فقد روى عن سهل بن سعدٍ الساعديّ:
Ash'ath bin Abi al-Sha'tha' narrates: I heard my father say: "I came to Madinah and saw Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) narrating from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), so I said: You narrate from Abu Hurayrah when you hold the rank of having been host to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He replied: 'Narrating through Abu Hurayrah is dearer to me than narrating directly from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) myself.'" Imam Abu Bakr said: "It was out of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah's (may Allah be pleased with him) eagerness for knowledge that, for the sake of acquiring knowledge, he would narrate even from those who had narrated fewer hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) than he had; thus he narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) as well."

(1) القائل: حدثناه، هو أبو بكر بن خزيمة، فإنَّ إبراهيم بن بسطام من شيوخه، وقد روى عنه في "صحيحه"، وإبراهيم هذا ذكره ابن حبان في "ثقاته" 8/ 85.
Identification of names: The one who says "haddathanahu" is Imam Abu Bakr bin Khuzaymah, since Ibrahim bin Bistam is his shaykh, from whom he narrated in his "Sahih".
(2) المَنزِلة: موضع النزول يريد أنه صاحب موضع نزول رسول الله ﷺ وقت الهجرة إلى المدينة.
Note / Clarification: "Al-manzilah" means the place of lodging; that is, he (Abu Ayyub al-Ansari) was the host of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time of the Hijrah to Madinah.
(3) خبر صحيح، وهذا إسناد حسن من أجل إبراهيم بن بسطام وشيخه سعيد الجحدري.
Grading: This is a sahih report, and this chain is "hasan" because of Ibrahim bin Bistam and Sa'id al-Jahdari.
وأخرجه الخطيب البغدادي في "موضح أوهام الجمع والتفريق" 2/ 136 - 137 من طريق علي بن إسماعيل بن حماد البزاز، عن إبراهيم بن بسطام، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi narrated it in "Mudih Awham al-Jam' wa al-Tafriq" (2/ 136) with this same chain.
وأخرجه أبو زرعة الدمشقي في "تاريخ دمشق" 1/ 545، وابن عساكر 67/ 358 من طرق عن شعبة، به.
Reference / Source: Abu Zur'ah al-Dimashqi and Ibn 'Asakir narrated it through several routes from Imam Shu'bah.
