Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6282

Muhammad bin Qays bin Makhramah states that a man came to Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him about some matter. Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Go to Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), for one day I, Abu Hurayrah and another companion of mine were sitting in the mosque, supplicating to Allah Almighty and remembering our Lord, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us and sat down near us." He said: As soon as he (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down, we fell silent (out of respect), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Resume what you were engaged in." Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "So my companion and I supplicated before Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kept saying Amin to our supplication. Then Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) supplicated, saying: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka mithla alladhi sa'alaka sahibaya hadhani, wa as'aluka 'ilman la yunsa' (O Allah, I ask You for the same things that these two companions of mine have asked of You, and I ask You for knowledge that is never forgotten)." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Amin." Then we too said: O Messenger of Allah, we also ask Allah for knowledge that is never forgotten. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Dawsi (Abu Hurayrah) has outstripped you both in this."
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (authentic in its chain), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The manuscripts have "wa-sakata", but the correct reading is what is narrated by al-Nasa'i and al-Tabarani.

Grading: This chain is weak because of the weakness of Hammad bin Shu'ayb; al-Dhahabi also identified this as its defect in "al-Talkhis".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator mistakenly made it a narration of Muhammad bin Qays bin Makhramah, whereas it is a narration of Muhammad bin Qays al-Madani al-Qass (the storyteller of 'Umar bin 'Abd al-'Aziz) from his father.
Grading: In this chain Qays is "majhul", since no one narrated from him except his son Muhammad.
