Mention of the virtues of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah al-Dawsi (may Allah be pleased with him); there is much disagreement about his name and the name of his father. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "In the Days of Ignorance my name was Abd Shams bin Sakhr; then, upon accepting Islam, I was named Abd al-Rahman. I came to be called by the kunyah Abu Hurayrah because I used to graze my family's goats, and I found the kittens of a wild cat, so I put them in my sleeve. When I returned and the sounds of the kittens were heard from my lap, the people asked: 'O Abd Shams, what is this?' I said: 'These are kittens that I found.' They said: 'Then you are Abu Hurayrah.' So after that this kunyah stuck to me." Ibn Ishaq says: Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) held a highly honoured position in the tribe of Daws.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak because the narrator from Abu Hurayrah is mubham (unnamed). 67/ 298. Reference / Source: This narration is in "Sirat Ibn Ishaq" (in the transmission of Yunus: 445), and through him Ibn Asakir narrated it in "Tarikh Dimashq" (67/ 298). Details of the narration: Al-Tirmidhi (3840) narrated via Abd Allah bin Rafi' from Abu Hurayrah: "I used to herd my family's goats, and I had a little kitten (hurayrah); at night I would put it in a tree, and in the day I would take it with me and play with it, and so they gave me the kunyah 'Abu Hurayrah'." Grading: Al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan, and it is as he said.
