(2). Yahya bin Uthman bin al-Arqam narrates from his grandfather Uthman bin al-Arqam that he used to say: "I am the son of the one who was seventh in Islam; my father was the seventh person to accept Islam. His house was on (Mount) al-Safa, and it is the very house in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed in the early period of Islam. In this house he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to invite people to Islam, and many people accepted Islam here. On the night of Monday, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made this supplication in this very house: 'Allahumma a'izza al-Islama bi-ahabbi al-rajulayni ilayka: Umara bin al-Khattab, aw Amri bin Hisham' (O Allah, grant strength and honour to Islam through whichever of the two men is more beloved to You: Umar bin al-Khattab or Amr bin Hisham (Abu Jahl)). So the next day, early in the morning, Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came and accepted Islam in the House of al-Arqam. Then they all came out of it, raising the takbir (to proclaim the truth), and openly performed tawaf of the House of Allah. For this reason the House of al-Arqam came to be called 'the House of Islam'. Sayyiduna al-Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) made this house a sadaqah (endowment) for his children. I myself read a copy of the endowment deed of this house, whose text was: 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is what al-Arqam has decided concerning this house of his near al-Safa: it is a sadaqah (endowment) in its place within the bounds of the Haram; it shall not be sold, nor shall it be divided by inheritance. Hisham bin al-As and so-and-so, the freed slave of Hisham bin al-As, bear witness to it.' The narrator says: This house remained a permanent endowment, in which his descendants lived; they also rented it out and collected its rent, until the time of the Caliph Abu Ja'far al-Mansur came."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts the name is distorted into "Abu Hafs", while in the Mahmudiyyah manuscript it is struck through and "Ja'far" written above it; this is correct, as the following story indicates. Abu Ja'far is the Abbasid caliph al-Mansur. 5/ 157. Grading: The chain of this report is weak. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Waqidi is well known to have been criticised, and the narrators above him (Uthman bin Hind and his father) are majhul. As for Yahya bin Uthman, Abu Hatim al-Razi called him "a Madinan shaykh, majhul", although Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 224), and through him Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Muntazam" (5/ 279-280), via Muhammad bin Imran from his father. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Sa'd's narration contains Yahya bin Imran's statement: "Indeed I know today …". Muhammad bin Imran and his father are both unknown (majhul). Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated its opening part, up to "and many people accepted Islam", in "Dhayl al-Mudhayyal" (Muntakhab: 11/ 519) via al-Waqidi. Grading: The supplication "O Allah, strengthen Islam through whichever of these two men is more beloved to You" is a hasan hadith; see number (4534).
