Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6203

Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad narrates from his father that Sayyiduna Huwaytib bin Abd al-Uzza (may Allah be pleased with him) sold his house in Makkah to Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) for forty thousand dinars. It was said to him: O Abu Muhammad! Forty thousand dinars (is a very large sum)! He replied: "What are forty thousand dinars to a man who has five dependents?" Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad says: At that time he gave priority to providing their food for every month. The narrator says: Then Huwaytib moved to Madinah and settled there. His house there was at al-Balat, near the writers of the Mushafs. Huwaytib bin Abd al-Uzza (may Allah be pleased with him) died in Madinah in 54 AH, and at the time of his death he was one hundred and twenty years old.
Mention of the virtues of Sayyiduna Yazid bin Shajarah al-Rahawi (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it from al-Waqidi in 'al-Tabaqat' (6/ 129), and through him Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "Islah al-Mal" (427) and "al-Nafaqah 'ala al-'Iyal" (101), and Ibn 'Asakir (15/ 363) also narrated it. In this regard, also see the statement of Mus'ab al-Zubayri that passed at the beginning of this biography.

Identification of names: The one speaking here is Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi.

Note / Clarification: 'Al-Ruhawi' is with a dammah on the ra', an attribution to 'Ruha'', a branch of the tribe of Madhhij in Yemen. 'Abd al-Ghani bin Sa'id read it with a fathah and al-Fayruzabadi followed him, but the majority of the experts in language and genealogy wrote it with a dammah. (See: Taj al-'Arus 38/ 402, and 'Allamah al-Mu'allimi al-Yamani's notes on al-Ansab 6/ 193-194.)
Identification of names: There is a difference of opinion about whether Yazid bin Shajarah was a Companion. Ibn Sa'd, Khalifah bin Khayyat, Abu Zur'ah and Abu Hatim al-Razi count him among the 'Tabi'in' and deny that he was a Companion, while Ibn Ma'in, Mus'ab al-Zubayri and al-Bukhari call him a Companion. Ibn Hibban withheld judgement.
Important point: The preponderant view is that he was not a Companion but a Tabi'i, and Allah knows best. (Detailed references: Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd 9/ 449, Tarikh Ibn Ma'in 3/ 5, Tarikh al-Bukhari 8/ 316, al-Isabah 6/ 662, etc.)
