Through the chain of Muhammad bin Umar (al-Waqidi), Ibrahim bin Ja'far bin Mahmud narrates from his father, and al-Mundhir bin Jahm also narrates, that Sayyiduna Huwaytib bin Abd al-Uzza (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered Makkah in the year of the Conquest, I became extremely afraid. I left my house and scattered my family in different places so that they would be safe. Then I went and hid in the garden of Awf. There I met Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him). There was a close friendship between him and me, and friendship is always beneficial. When I saw him, I began to run away from him (in fear). He called out: "O Abu Muhammad!" I answered: "Labbayk (Here I am)." He asked: "What is the matter with you?" I said: "I am afraid." He said: "There is no fear for you. Come, you are under the protection of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic." So I came back to him and greeted him with salam. He said: "Go to your house." I said: "Where is there a way for me to my house? By Allah! I do not think I will reach my house alive; rather, before that I will be seized and killed, or they will break into my house and kill me. And my family are also in scattered places." He said: "Gather your family in one place, and I will go with you to your house." So he went with me and kept calling out along the way: "Indeed Huwaytib has been granted safety, so let no one harm him." Then Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Have not all the people been granted safety, except those whom I ordered to be killed?" Huwaytib says: At this I was reassured, and I brought my family back to their homes. Then Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to me again and said to me: "O Abu Muhammad! Until when, and how far? You have been left behind in all the battles; much good has escaped you, but much good still remains. So go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and accept Islam, so that you may be safe. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is the most righteous of people, the most attentive to the ties of kinship and the most forbearing. His honour is your honour, and his might is your might." I said: "I will go with you and present myself before him (peace and blessings be upon him)." So I went out with him until I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Batha'. At that time Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) were with him (peace and blessings be upon him). I stood by his head (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) what should be said when greeting him (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: "Say: 'As-salamu alayka ayyuha an-Nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh' (Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings)." I said those same words, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "And upon you be peace, O Huwaytib!" Then I said: "I bear witness that there is no true god except Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All praise is for Allah, who has guided you." Huwaytib says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was very pleased at my acceptance of Islam. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me for a loan of wealth, and I lent him (peace and blessings be upon him) forty thousand dirhams. I took part with him (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Battles of Hunayn and Ta'if, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me one hundred camels from the spoils of Hunayn.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In our manuscripts this word has been corrupted to "faqala"; the correct form is what is in the sources of the takhrij.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (Z) and (B) it is "hatta wa mata", while the word "mata" has dropped out of manuscripts (M) and (S); we have recorded it according to the other reliable sources.
Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak) because al-Waqidi is alone in it, and he has two chains for it: 15/ 358. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the first chain there is a suspicion of a break; the second chain is completely 'talif' (extremely weak), because it contains Ibn Abi Sabrah, who is 'matruk (abandoned)' and whom Imam Ahmad accused of lying; also al-Mundhir bin Jahm is 'majhul (unknown)'. Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (6/ 128-129) and Ibn 'Asakir (15/ 358) narrated it via al-Waqidi.
