حَدَّثَنَا (2) يحيى بن عبد الله بن أبي قَتَادة عن أبيه، عن أبي قَتَادة، قال: أدرَكَني رسولُ الله ﷺ يومَ ذي قَرَدٍ، فنظر إليَّ فقال: "اللهمَّ بارِكْ له في شَعَرِه وبَشَرِه" وقال: "أفلَحَ وجهُك"، قلتُ: ووجهُك يا رسول الله، قال: "قتلتَ مَسْعَدةَ؟ " قلت: نعم، قال: "فما هذا الذي بوَجهِك؟ " قلتُ: سهمٌ رُمِيتُ به يا رسول الله، قال: "فادْنُ"، فدَنَوتُ منه، فبَصَقَ عليه، فما ضَرَبَ عَلَيَّ قطُّ ولا قاحَ. قال ابن عمر: وحدثني يحيى بن عبد الله بن أبي قَتَادة قال: تُوفي أبو قَتَادة بالمدينة سنةَ أربعٍ وخمسين وهو ابن سبعين (1). قال ابن عمر: ولم أرَ بين ولد أبي قَتَادة وأهل البلد عندنا اختلافًا أنَّ أبا قَتَادة تُوفي بالمدينة، وقد روى أهلُ الكوفة أنَّ أبا قَتَادة مات بالكوفة (2).
Yahya bin Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah narrates from his father, and he from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him), that on the day of Dhu Qarad the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) met me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at me and supplicated: 'Allahumma barik lahu fi sha'rihi wa basharihi' (O Allah, bless him in his hair and his skin), and said: "May your face prosper." I said: And your face too, O Messenger of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did you kill Mas'adah?" I said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then what is this (mark) on your face?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, an arrow struck me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Come close." I came close, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) applied his saliva to it, and after that the wound never ached nor did it ever fester. Yahya bin Abdullah says that Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away in Madinah in 54 AH, when he was seventy years old. Muhammad bin Umar (al-Waqidi) says that among the children of Abu Qatadah and the people of Madinah there is no disagreement that he passed away in Madinah; however, the people of Kufah have narrated that he passed away in Kufah.

(1) وهو في "مغازي الواقدي" 2/ 545، وعنه أخرجه ابن سعد في "الطبقات" 4/ 378 و 381. والواقدي متكلَّم فيه.
Reference / Source: It is in "Maghazi al-Waqidi" (2/545), and Ibn Sa'd narrated it from him in "al-Tabaqat" (4/378, 381).
Grading: Al-Waqidi has been criticized by the imams of jarh wa ta'dil (that is, he is weak).
وأخرج الطبراني في "الصغير" (1195) من طريق مصعب بن ثابت بن عبد الله بن أبي قتادة، عن أبيه ثابت، عن أبيه عبد الله بن أبي قتادة، عن أبي قتادة قال: أغار المشركون على لِقاح رسول الله ﷺ، فركبتُ فأدركتُهم وقتلتُ مَسعَدة، فقال رسول الله ﷺ حين رآني: "أفلح الوجه، اللهم اغفر له" ثلاثًا، ونفَّلني سَلَبَ مسعدة. قال الهيثمي في "مجمع الزوائد" 9/ 319: وفيه من لم أعرفهم. يعني أنهم مجاهيل.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated in "al-Mu'jam al-Saghir" (1195) from Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him): The polytheists raided the milch camels of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); I pursued and caught up with them, and killed Mas'adah. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me, he said three times: "May the face prosper; O Allah, forgive him", and he gave me the belongings of Mas'adah as a bonus (nafl).
Grading: Al-Haythami says in "Majma' al-Zawa'id" (9/319) that it contains narrators whom he does not know, meaning they are "majahil" (unknown).
(2) أخرجه ابن سعد في "الطبقات" 4/ 381 و 8/ 138 عن الواقدي.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" (4/381 and 8/138) via al-Waqidi.
وأخرج الخطيب في "تاريخ بغداد" 1/ 505 من طريق محمد بن سعد، عن الواقدي، عن يحيى بن عبد الله بن أبي قتادة قال: توفي أبو قتادة بالمدينة سنة أربع وخمسين، وهو ابن سبعين سنة.
Reference / Source: Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi narrated in "Tarikh Baghdad" (1/505) via al-Waqidi that Abu Qatadah died in Madinah in 54 AH at the age of 70.
قال الخطيب بإثره: قال ابن سعد: وأخبرنا الهيثم بن عدي، قال: توفي أبو قتادة بالكوفة وعليٌّ بها، وهو صلَّى عليه.
Reference / Source: According to al-Khatib, Ibn Sa'd transmitted from al-Haytham bin Adi that Abu Qatadah died in Kufa while Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was there, and that he led his funeral prayer.
وأخرج الخطيب أيضًا 1/ 502 من طريق عفان بن أحمد، عن حنبل بن إسحاق قال: وبلغني أنه توفي أبو قتادة الحارث بن ربعي سنة ثمان وثلاثين في خلافة علي، وصلَّى عليه عليٌّ بالكوفة.
Reference / Source: Al-Khatib also narrated from Hanbal bin Ishaq that Abu Qatadah (al-Harith bin Rib'i) died in 38 AH during the caliphate of Ali, and that Ali led his funeral prayer in Kufa.
Important point: This is the statement of Muhammad bin Umar al-Waqidi.
