It is narrated from Muhammad bin Umar (al-Waqidi) that Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) remained (at first) upon the polytheistic religion of his people, until he took part in the Battle of Badr on the side of the polytheists and issued a challenge to single combat. His father, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), stood up to face him, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): "Let us continue to benefit from your person (that is, withdraw from the fight)." Then Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) embraced Islam during the period of the truce of Hudaybiyah. His kunyah was Abu Abdullah, and he died in 53 AH during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him). Among the children of Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman was a son named Abu Atiq, and his descendants are called Banu Abi Atiq.

1/ 257. Important point: Muhammad bin Umar is al-Waqidi, and this account is in his book "al-Maghazi" (1/257). Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (5/21) and Ibn Abd al-Barr in "al-Isti'ab" mentioned it without a chain. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it (8/186) via al-Waqidi from Abu al-Zinad, and it mentions his accepting Islam during the truce of al-Hudaybiyah. Reference / Source: Ibn Asakir transmitted, via Ibn Abi al-Dunya, the statement of Muhammad bin Sa'd that the kunyah of Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) was Abu Abdullah, that he accepted Islam at (the truce of) al-Hudaybiyah, and that he died in 53 AH.
