(2) (3). It is narrated from Abu Mikhnaf that Hudbah bin Fayyad al-A'war was ordered to kill Sayyiduna Hujr bin Adi (may Allah be pleased with him). He advanced towards him with a sword, and (out of fear of Allah) his shoulders began to tremble. He said: "O Hujr! Did you not claim that you are not alarmed by death? We are leaving you (to be handed over to death)." Hujr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Why should I not be alarmed when I see a dug grave, a spread-out shroud and a drawn sword? But by Allah! I will not say (with my tongue) anything that angers my Lord." The narrator says: Then he martyred him, and this event took place in the month of Sha'ban in the year 51 AH.

Note / Clarification: This phrase is explained by the words that appear explicitly in the histories of al-Tabari and Ibn 'Asakir: "I will leave you alone, so declare yourself free of your companion".
Important point: In our manuscripts it has been distorted here into "61 AH", whereas the correct reading is "51 AH", as in the Mahmudiyyah manuscript, the Dar al-Mayman edition and Imam al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis". Reference / Source: According to Ibn Abd al-Barr's "al-Isti'ab", Ibn al-Athir's "Usd al-Ghabah" and al-Dhahabi's "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'", he was killed in 51 AH. Ibn Hibban mentioned 53 AH and also a view of 51 AH. Imam al-Bukhari stated explicitly in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" that this happened in the time of Lady 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she died in 57 AH.
Grading: About Abu Mikhnaf (Lut bin Yahya), Imam al-Dhahabi said in "Mizan al-I'tidal" that he is a "talif" (worthless) narrator of historical reports and cannot be relied upon. 11/ 235. Reference / Source: A similar report was mentioned by Imam al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" (5/ 76), Ibn 'Asakir (8/ 26), Ibn al-Athir in "al-Kamil" (3/ 80) and Ibn Kathir in "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah" (11/ 235).
