It is narrated from Muhammad bin Umar (al-Waqidi) that the name of Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) is Abdullah bin Qays bin Sulaym bin Haddar bin Harb bin Amir bin Bakr bin Amir bin Adhar bin Wa'il bin Najiyah bin al-Jumahir bin al-Ash'ar, and al-Ash'ar is Nabt bin Udad bin Yashjub bin Ya'rub bin Qahtan. His mother was Zabyah bint Wahb bin Atik, who accepted Islam and passed away in Madinah. Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Makkah and became an ally of Abu Uhayhah Sa'id bin al-As, accepted Islam there in Makkah, emigrated to Abyssinia, and then arrived with the people of the two ships at the time when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was at Khaybar.

Important point: In manuscript (Z) this word has been distorted into "Hurayb", and it is likewise in manuscripts (S) and (M) but without dots. We have corrected it in the light of the sources on the narrator's biography.
Important point: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this word has been distorted into "al-tis'in" (ninety), while in manuscripts (S) and (M) it is written "al-sab'in" (seventy). We have corrected it in the light of the reliable sources of takhrij and biography.
Reference / Source: Imam Ibn Sa'd narrated this report in "al-Tabaqat" (4/ 98), and through his route Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (32/ 25), via Muhammad bin 'Umar (al-Waqidi). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Waqidi's statement that "Abu Musa came to Makkah" and so on contradicts Ibn Sa'd's own other narration (4/ 99), which he reported through the route of al-Waqidi from Khalid bin Ilyas from Abu Bakr bin Abd Allah. According to this other narration, Abu Musa was not among those who emigrated to Abyssinia, nor did he have any alliance within Quraysh; rather, he accepted Islam in Makkah, then returned to his people's land (Yemen) and remained there until he and other Ash'aris came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Their arrival coincided with the arrival of Ja'far and his companions from Abyssinia in two ships, and they all met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at Khaybar. So people thought that Abu Musa had come with the people of the two ships, whereas in reality his arrival merely coincided with theirs. Grading: We say: the correct account of the arrival of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) is the one narrated by Imam al-Bukhari (3136, 3876, 4230), Muslim (2502) and Abu Dawud (2725) through the route of Abu Burdah from Abu Musa. Details of the narration: Abu Musa said that when news of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) emergence reached us in Yemen, I set out to emigrate with my two brothers (Abu Burdah and Abu Ruhm) and about 52 or 53 men of my people. We boarded a ship, but our ship (changed course and) took us to the Negus in Abyssinia. There we met Ja'far bin Abi Talib and his companions, who kept us with them until we all set out together and reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time of the conquest of Khaybar. He (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us a share of the spoils of Khaybar, although he did not give a share to those who were absent at the conquest, except for Ja'far and the people of the ship (who received a share despite being absent). This is the wording of al-Bukhari.
