Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (sahih due to other reports). There is no harm in the narrators of its chain, but there is disagreement about whether "al-Munkadir bin 'Abd Allah" was a Companion.
Technical research: Al-Tabarani, al-Hakim and others accepted that he was a Companion, but Imam al-Bukhari said in "al-Du'afa'": "His hearing from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is not known." Ibn 'Abd al-Barr said in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 715): "According to the hadith scholars his hadith is mursal; his companionship is not established, but he was born in the time of the Messenger of Allah." We (the editors) say: Ibn Hibban counted him among the Successors (Tabi'in). In any case, the hadith has supporting reports through which it is judged sahih.
Identification of the narrator: Here "Abu Nu'aym" is al-Fadl bin Dukayn.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (20/ 845), and from him Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (no. 6267), by way of 'Ali bin 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Baghawi, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated it in "al-Musannaf" (no. 12807 - 'Awwamah edition), Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" (2/ 116), Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" (2/ 200), al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (3758, 3759) and Ibn Hajar in "Nata'ij al-Afkar" (5/ 278-279), by various routes from "Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn".
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari narrated it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (8/ 35) in mu'allaq form (without a full chain) and in "al-Du'afa'" (as in al-Dhahabi's "Mizan al-I'tidal" 4/ 190), and Abu Nu'aym in "al-Ma'rifah" (no. 6267), by way of Muslim bin Ibrahim, from Hurayth bin al-Sa'ib.
Reference / Source: Imam Abu Nu'aym narrated this report in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (6268) by way of Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj, who reported it from Muhammad bin al-Munkadir, and he from his father (al-Munkadir bin 'Abd Allah).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Daraqutni says in "al-Ghara'ib wa al-Afrad" (as reported in Ibn Tahir al-Maqdisi's "Atraf" 4417) that Abu 'Ubaydah bin Abi al-Safar is alone in narrating this, by way of Wahb bin Jarir bin Hazim, from Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj, from Muhammad bin al-Munkadir, from his father. Imam al-Daraqutni also stated explicitly in "al-'Ilal" (3429) that this narration is not established (sahih) from Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This narration is supported by the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) which has passed with the author (al-Hakim) under hadith number (1819), and its chain is sahih.
Note / Clarification: The word "usbu'an" in the text means "seven", i.e. seven circuits around the House of Allah (the seven circuits of tawaf).
