Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6018

It is narrated from Mus'ab bin Abdullah al-Zubayri that Sayyiduna Abu Abdullah Amr bin al-As bin Wa'il bin Hashim bin Su'ayd bin Sahm bin Amr bin Husays bin Ka'b bin Lu'ayy bin Ghalib (may Allah be pleased with him) was short in stature and used to dye his hair black. His mother's name was al-Nabighah bint Khuzaymah bin al-Harith; it is also said that she was al-Nabighah bint Harmalah, a captive from the tribe of Anazah. His maternal brother was Urwah bin Abi Uthathah al-Adawi, who was among those who emigrated to Abyssinia, while his full brother Hisham bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred at the Battle of Ajnadayn. According to one report, Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away in the year 51 AH. And Allah knows best.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscript (Z) this name is vocalized in this way in the diminutive form (with a dammah on the first letter): "Su'ayd". See the discussion of its vocalization under the earlier narration number (5127).

Note / Clarification: Our manuscripts have "Harmalah bin Shaybah", which is a distortion (tahrif) giving the false impression that al-Nabighah's grandfather was named Shaybah, whereas there is no one named Shaybah in her lineage. The correct text was taken from Mus'ab al-Zubayri's "Nasab Quraysh" (p. 409).

Note / Clarification: In our manuscripts this name was distorted into "bin Umamah"; it was corrected from Mus'ab al-Zubayri's "Nasab Quraysh" (p. 409).

Important point: What is said here about the year of 'Amr bin al-'As's death contradicts the statement of al-Waqidi, al-Haytham bin 'Adi, al-Mada'ini and al-Layth (as Ibn Zabr al-Raba'i narrated from them in "Tarikh al-'Ulama' wa Wafayatihim" 1/ 141-142)
Important point: Where they stated firmly that he died in the year 43 AH. And their statement also contradicts the statement of Ibn Numayr (which has passed) that he died in the year 42 AH.
Note / Clarification: (i.e., 42 AH).
