Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6014

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qurrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of Qadisiyyah, Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) was sent as an envoy to the chief of the Persians. He said: "Send ten men with me." So they sent ten men with him. He put his garments in order, took a small shield and went until they reached them. He said: "Put down a shield for me to sit on," and then he sat on it. That non-Arab said: "O people of the Arabs! I know what has driven you to come to us. You are a people who do not find enough food in your land to eat your fill. Take from us as much grain as you need, for we are a Magian people and we dislike shedding your blood, lest you make our land impure." Sayyiduna al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "By Allah! That is not why we have come. Rather, we were a people who worshipped stones and idols; when we saw a stone better than another, we would throw the first away and take up the other. We did not know our Lord, until Allah sent to us a Messenger from among ourselves. He invited us to Islam and we followed him. We have not come for food; rather, we have been commanded to fight our enemy who has not accepted Islam. We have come here to kill your fighters and to take your offspring captive. As for what you said about food, by my life! We truly did not have enough food to eat our fill, and sometimes we did not even get enough water to drink. Then we came to this land of yours and found abundant food and water here. So by Allah! We will not leave this place until this land becomes either ours or yours." At this the non-Arab said in Persian: "He has spoken the truth." Then he said: "Your eye will be put out tomorrow." And the very next day his eye was lost; an arrow had struck him.
This hadith is gharib and sahih in its chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
