Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The one meant is Nafi' bin al-Harith, the maternal half-brother of Abu Bakrah, who was mentioned earlier. His kunyah was Abu 'Abd Allah, as will come when their testimony against al-Mughirah is mentioned in this narration.
Grading: Its chain is weak because Muhammad bin Nafi' al-Karabisi is majhul (unknown). In his generation there is Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Nafi' al-'Abdi al-Basri, whom al-Mizzi mentioned in "al-Tahdhib" among those who narrate from Abu 'Attab Sahl bin Hammad. If it is he, the chain is "hasan", since both he and Abu 'Attab are "saduq" (truthful). But we did not find this Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Nafi' attributed to "karabis" (which is a kind of cloth). Allah knows best. In any case, the basis of the report is sahih, and it has several routes that strengthen one another.
Reference / Source: Al-Baladhuri narrated it in abridged form in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (10/ 388-389) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (8/ 235) by way of Hushaym bin Bashir, from 'Uyaynah bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Jawshan, from his father, from Abu Bakrah. Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy).
Reference / Source: However, Ibn Abi Shaybah (9/ 535 and 11/ 101) and Ahmad in "al-'Ilal" (2820, in the narration of 'Abd Allah) narrated some parts of this report from Isma'il bin 'Ulayyah, from 'Uyaynah bin 'Abd al-Rahman, from his father, but he narrated it as "mursal" and did not mention Abu Bakrah. Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: The report was narrated in abridged form by "mursal" routes by al-Shafi'i in "al-Umm" (8/ 64), Ibn Sa'd (5/ 179), 'Abd al-Razzaq (13564-13566 and 15550), Ibn Abi Shaybah (10/ 91 and 92), Ibn al-Mundhir in "al-Awsat" (6731, 6732 and 19231-9234), al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (18/ 75) and "Tarikh" (4/ 69), al-Tahawi in "Mushkil al-Athar" (12/ 359-362) and "Ma'ani al-Athar" (4/ 153), al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (7227), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (3778), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan" (8/ 23 and 10/ 148, 152) and Ibn 'Asakir (60/ 32-33 and 62/ 215-216). See Ibn Kathir's "Musnad al-Faruq" (778-781) and "Fath al-Bari" (8/ 309-310).
Important point: His statement here that he died in the year 19 AH is "gharib" (odd). The historians have mentioned that 'Utbah died in the year 17 AH. Ibn Zabr al-Raba'i reported this in "Tarikh al-'Ulama'" (1/ 102) from al-Waqidi, Ibn Numayr and al-Fallas. Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi also reported the same in "Tarikh Baghdad" (1/ 498) from Ya'qub bin Sufyan, Ibn al-Barqi and Sa'id bin 'Ufayr. It is reported from Muhammad bin al-Muthanna and Khalifah bin Khayyat that he died in the year 14 AH, and from Abu Hassan al-Ziyadi that he died in the year 15 AH. Then al-Khatib said: What is closest to correct is that 'Utbah died in the year 17 AH, because al-Mada'in was conquered in the year 16 AH, then after that Basrah was founded and the Muslims settled there, and 'Utbah was the first to lay it out and live there.
