Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6004

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) dropped his ring into the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (out of eagerness to go down into the blessed grave), Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "It must not be spread about that you went down into the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), nor should you tell people that your ring remained in the grave." Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went down into the blessed grave, saw where the ring was, picked it up and handed it to Sayyiduna al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hadith Grading

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak. Muhammad bin 'Umar (al-Waqidi) is alone in narrating it with this chain. Ibn Sa'd narrated it from him in "al-Tabaqat" (2/ 264 and 5/ 177), but he did not mention in the chain the grandfather of 'Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin 'Umar bin 'Ali, which made the report "munqati'" (disconnected). Likewise al-Tabari cited it in "Dhayl al-Mudhayyal" (as printed in "al-Muntakhab" appended to "Tarikh al-Tabari" 11/ 513) without mentioning 'Umar bin 'Ali bin Abi Talib.
Reference / Source: Al-Waqidi also narrated it, as Ibn Sa'd narrated from him in (2/ 264). Al-Waqidi narrated it from 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd al-'Aziz (Ibn 'Abd Allah bin 'Uthman bin Hunayf), and he from 'Abd Allah bin Abi Bakr bin Muhammad bin 'Amr bin Hazm as "mursal".
Grading: Besides being "mursal", this narration is among the "tafarrudat" (solitary reports) of al-Waqidi, and his shaykh ('Abd al-Rahman) is disputed and closer to weakness.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (2/ 263) narrated from Surayj bin al-Nu'man, from Hushaym, from Abu Ma'shar, who said: Some of our shaykhs told me that when 'Ali came out of the (Prophet's) grave, al-Mughirah dropped his ring into the grave and said to 'Ali: "My ring!" So 'Ali said to al-Hasan bin 'Ali: "Go in and hand him his ring," and he did so.
Grading: Besides being "mursal", this narration contains the "'an'anah" (narrating with "from") of Hushaym, and his shaykh Abu Ma'shar (Najih bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sindi) is weak.
Important point: The opposite of this has also been narrated: that al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah went down into the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and picked up his ring, and that 'Ali permitted him to do so and did not prevent him.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" (2/ 263 and 5/ 176), Ibn Abi Shaybah and Ahmad bin Mani' in their "Musnads" (as in "al-Matalib" 4332), al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (1/ 578), Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (1547), Abu Ya'la in "al-Musnad al-Kabir" (as in "al-Matalib" 4332), Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (5/ 401), Ibn al-Mundhir in "al-Awsat" (3164), al-Tahawi in "Mushkil al-Athar" (2839), al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (20/ 993) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (60/ 29) by way of Mujalid bin Sa'id; and Ibn 'Asakir (60/ 29) by way of al-Mughirah bin Miqsam and 'Asim al-Ahwal. All three narrate from 'Amir al-Sha'bi, from al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah, who said: "I am the last of the people in contact with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was buried and 'Ali came out of the grave, I dropped my ring, then I said: O Abu al-Hasan, my ring! He said: Go down and take your ring. So I went down, took my ring and placed my ring on the unbaked bricks (of the lahd), then I came out."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Most of Mujalid's narrations mention an "axe" (fa's) instead of the ring, which is a "wahm" (error). What is correct is the version in which Mujalid agreed with his two companions (al-Mughirah bin Miqsam and 'Asim al-Ahwal). Mujalid is weak, but the other two routes are strong.
Reference / Source: Something similar is narrated from 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr as "mursal" in Ibn Sa'd (2/ 263), and its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy).
Reference / Source: Likewise it is narrated from 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Abd Allah bin 'Utbah as "mursal" in Ibn Sa'd (2/ 264) as well, but this is from the narration of al-Waqidi.
Reference / Source: Al-Mughirah's entering the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is established from the narration of Abu 'Asib (or Abu 'Asim) in Ahmad (34/ 20766). He said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was placed in his lahd, al-Mughirah said: Something remains to be set right at his feet. The people said: Go in and set it right. So he went in, put his hand inside and touched his feet, then said: Pour the earth over me. They poured earth over him until it reached halfway up his shins, then he came out, and he used to say: I am the one among you most recently in contact with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Its chain is sahih. And see the hadith of 'Ali in Ahmad (2/ 787).
