Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the servant commits a sin, a black spot is placed upon his heart. Then, if he repents, his heart is polished clean; and if he sins again, that spot grows until it overcomes his heart. That is the 'ran' (rust) which Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has mentioned: 'No! Rather, the rust (of their evil deeds) has covered their hearts.' [Surah al-Mutaffifin: 14]"
This is a hadith that has not been recorded in the "Two Sahihs", although Imam Muslim used the hadiths of al-Qa'qa' bin Hakim from Abu Salih as evidence.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is strong.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This strength is on account of Abu Khalid al-Ahmar (who is Sulayman bin Hayyan) and Muhammad bin 'Ajlan.
Details of the narration: Abu Kurayb here refers to "Muhammad bin al-'Ala'", and Abu Salih refers to "Dhakwan al-Samman".
Reference / Source: This hadith was recorded by Ibn Majah (4244), al-Tirmidhi (3334), al-Nasa'i (10179) and (11594), and Ibn Hibban (930), through various routes from Muhammad bin 'Ajlan with this same chain.
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is hasan sahih.
Reference / Source: This hadith will also come later with the author (al-Hakim) at number (3952) by way of Safwan bin 'Isa from Ibn 'Ajlan.
Note / Clarification: Ibn al-Athir said in "al-Nihayah" (under the root: r-y-n): The root meaning of "al-rayn" is sealing and covering, and from it is the saying of Allah the Exalted: {Nay! Rather, what they used to earn has covered their hearts}, meaning: He sealed and closed them. And al-Farra' said in "Ma'ani al-Qur'an" 3/ 246: When their sins and acts of disobedience became many, they encompassed their hearts, and that is the "rayn" (rust) upon them.
Note / Clarification: The word "suqila" means "juliya", i.e. it was cleaned and polished.

Note / Clarification: Manuscript (B) reads: "a sahih hadith".
