Explanation & Benefits

Grading: It is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (sahih on account of supporting reports). Technical note / Defect ('illah): On its own this chain is weak; Muhammad bin Kathir al-Missisi (al-San'ani) is a weak narrator whose narration can be taken for support. He was contradicted by more reliable narrators, who did not name Imam al-Awza'i's teacher but used the vague words "I was informed from Sa'id". Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (386) and Ibn Hibban (386) narrated it via the chain of Ahmad bin Ibrahim al-Dawraqi from Muhammad bin Kathir. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (385) transmitted it via the route of Abu al-Mughirah, al-Walid bin Mazyad and 'Umar bin 'Abd al-Wahid from Imam al-Awza'i, who said: "I was informed that Sa'id al-Maqburi narrated from his father, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him)". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It has a supporting report (shahid) in the hadith of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) in Abu Dawud (387), and its chain is strong (qawi).
