Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah, but al-Hasan (Ibn Abi al-Hasan al-Basri) did not meet al-Hakam al-Ghifari, so his narration from him is mursal.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Mu'alla is Zayd bin Murrah bin Abi Layla al-Basri.
Important point: A report like this has come by more than one route from 'Abs (also called 'Abis) al-Ghifari instead of al-Hakam bin 'Amr, and it seems the narration naming 'Abs al-Ghifari is more likely (ashbah) than the narration naming al-Hakam bin 'Amr. Allah Most High knows best.
Important point: Ibn 'Abd al-Barr said in "al-Tamhid" (18/ 147): "This is a well-known (mashhur) hadith narrated from 'Abs al-Ghifari by several routes, and we have mentioned them in 'al-Bayan 'an Tilawat al-Qur'an'."
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Kabir" (3162) from al-Husayn bin Ishaq al-Tustari, with this chain.
Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Razzaq recorded it in his "Musannaf" (4186) from Ibn Jurayj, who said: More than one person told me from Abu Hurayrah that he heard a man, who they mentioned was al-Hakam al-Ghifari, say: "O plague, take me." He then mentioned the report and attributed the six traits as marfu' to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Some of Ibn Jurayj's teachers certainly met Abu Hurayrah, such as 'Ata' bin Abi Rabah and Nafi' the freed slave of Ibn 'Umar. But there is disagreement about it from Abu Hurayrah: some who narrated it from Abu Hurayrah made it his own statement, that he prayed against himself, and that he was reproached for it and replied with words like those of al-Hakam mentioned here.
Reference / Source: For Ibn Sa'd recorded it in his "al-Tabaqat" (5/ 254) by way of Habib bin Abi Fadalah: that Abu Hurayrah mentioned death as though he wished for it, and one of his companions said: "How can you wish for death?" The report is similar.
Grading: Its narrators are acceptable (la ba'sa bihim).
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym also recorded it in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 384) by way of 'Ata' bin Abi Rabah, from Abu Hurayrah, similar to the narration of Habib bin Abi Fadalah, and its chain is hasan.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani also recorded something similar in "al-Awsat" (1397) by way of 'Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an, from Abu Hazim, from Abu Hurayrah, and its chain is weak because of the weakness of Ibn Jud'an.
Reference / Source: Something similar is narrated from 'Abs al-Ghifari (also called 'Abis al-Ghifari). Ahmad (25/ 16040) recorded it from Yazid bin Harun, from Sharik al-Nakha'i, from 'Uthman bin 'Umayr, from Zadhan Abu 'Umar, from 'Ulaym, who said: "We were sitting on a roof, and with us was a man from the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)" (Yazid said: I only know him to be 'Abs al-Ghifari) "while the people were going out in the plague, and 'Abs said: 'O plague, take me.'" He then mentioned something like the hadith of al-Hakam bin 'Amr: that 'Ulaym objected to 'Abs, and 'Abs answered him with the like of what came in the report of al-Hakam al-Ghifari, and attributed the six traits as marfu' to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Narrators other than Yazid bin Harun, Ahmad's teacher, stated with certainty that the Companion is 'Abs al-Ghifari.
Note / Clarification: "Selling judgement" (bay' al-hukm) means bribery in judgement, as came explained in a narration in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (18/ 62).
Note / Clarification: "and a young generation (nash'an) who will appear at the end of time": this means a group of people young in age.
