Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5956

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraydah al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was encamped before the people of Khaybar, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tomorrow I will give this banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him." When the next day came, a group of the Companions stretched their necks in hope of it. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), whose eyes were sore; he (peace and blessings be upon him) applied his saliva to his eyes and gave him the banner. The people advanced with him and came face to face with the people of Khaybar. There Marhab came out reciting rajaz verses, saying: "Khaybar knows that I am Marhab / fully armed, a seasoned hero; when swords come flashing like flames / I sometimes thrust with the spear and sometimes strike." Then he and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) faced each other and exchanged two blows each. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) struck him on the head such that the sword went down to his molars, and the people of the army heard the sound of that blow, and he killed him. The last of the people had not yet arrived when victory had already been granted to the first of them.
This is a great chapter, which I have presented in detail in "al-Abwab".

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The mention of Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) has dropped from our manuscripts, while it is established in the narration of the hadith by all who recorded it; more than one of them narrated it from Rawh bin 'Ubadah himself and mentioned him.

Note / Clarification: In the Mahmudiyyah manuscript, as in the al-Mayman edition: "shaki", and all are permissible. One says: "rajul shaki al-silah", "sha'ik al-silah" and "shak al-silah", meaning: sharp in weapons, or fully armed and completely prepared.

Grading: The hadith is sahih, while this chain is weak because of the weakness of Maymun Abu 'Abdullah (al-Kindi al-Basri), but he is corroborated.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (38/ 23031) recorded it from Rawh bin 'Ubadah, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad also recorded it (23031), and al-Nasa'i (8347 and 8546), by way of Muhammad bin Ja'far, from 'Awf bin Abi Jamilah, with it.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (22993) and al-Nasa'i (8346 and 8547) recorded something similar, without mentioning the story of Marhab and his being killed by 'Ali bin Abi Talib, by way of al-Husayn bin Waqid, from 'Abdullah bin Buraydah al-Aslami, with it.
Grading: And al-Husayn bin Waqid is strong in hadith (qawi al-hadith).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated this report in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (9/ 132) and in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (4/ 210) by way of al-Husayn bin Waqid, and added in his narration: "I heard 'Abdullah bin Buraydah say: My father told me that he was the one who faced Marhab." He narrated it thus in abridged form.
Reference / Source: With the mention of the story of Marhab and his being killed by 'Ali, it was also recorded in abridged form by Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Sunnah" (1380), al-Tabarani in "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (2444) and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Talkhis al-Mutashabih fi al-Rasm" (2/ 826), by way of 'Ata' bin Abi Muslim al-Khurasani, from 'Abdullah bin Buraydah, with it.
Grading: 'Ata' is also strong in hadith (qawi al-hadith).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Supporting it, with the mention of the story of Marhab and his being killed by 'Ali, is the hadith of Salamah bin al-Akwa' in Ahmad (27/ 16538), Muslim (1807) and Ibn Hibban (6935). It is also in al-Bukhari (2975, 3702 and 4209), but abridged, with only the story of giving the banner to 'Ali and Khaybar being conquered at his hands, without the story of Marhab and his being killed by 'Ali.
