It is narrated from Amr bin Dinar that the first to write dates on letters and official documents was Sayyiduna Ya'la bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him), when he was (governor) in Yemen. For the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah in the month of Rabi' al-Awwal, and the people reckoned the date from the beginning of the year; however, the people fixed the dating from the time of the arrival of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Grading: Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), but it is "mursal", because Amr bin Dinar (al-Makki) did not meet Ya'la bin Umayyah, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar pointed out in "al-Fath" (11/512), and his narration from him here is apparently "mursal". Reference / Source: Ya'qub bin Sufyan narrated it in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" (as in Ibn Nasir al-Din al-Dimashqi's "Jami' al-Athar" 5/379) from Salamah bin Shabib; al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" (2/390) from Ahmad bin Thabit al-Razi; and Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (1/40) through the route of Hanbal bin Ishaq. All three of them narrate it from Abu Abd Allah Ahmad bin Hanbal, with this chain. Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Khaythamah narrated it in the third part (al-sifr al-thalith) of his "Tarikh" (1377) from Ahmad bin Hanbal, with this chain, but without mentioning the dating of Ya'la bin Umayyah's time while he was in Yemen.
