Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5888

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: At the time of the battle of Bu'ath I was six years old, and it took place five years before the Hijrah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, I was eleven years old. I was brought to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and the people said: This is a boy of the Khazraj tribe who has recited sixteen surahs of the Qur'an. I was not permitted (because of my young age) to take part in the battles of Badr and Uhud, but I was permitted to take part in the battle of the Trench.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is da'if. Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Sa'd bin Zurarah is "majhul al-'ayn" (an unknown person); no one other than Muhammad bin Umar (al-Waqidi) narrated from him. And in the narration of Yahya bin Abdullah bin Abd al-Rahman bin Sa'd bin Zurarah from Zayd bin Thabit there is a likelihood of "irsal" (a break).
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" (5/ 307) from Muhammad bin Umar al-Waqidi with this chain.
Important point: With Ibn Sa'd (1/ 186) there is a narration indicating that the Battle of Bu'ath took place three years before the Hijrah. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared this view correct in "al-Fath" (4/ 9) and said: "This is the relied-upon view." He preferred it over what is narrated in the story of Zayd bin Thabit, that the Battle of Bu'ath took place five years before the Hijrah.
Reference / Source: As for Zayd bin Thabit being 11 years old at the time of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) arrival, Zayd himself narrated this too, in al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (4742) and Abu Nu'aym's "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (2896), with a "hasan chain". And the story of Zayd bin Thabit being brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is narrated "mawsul" from Zayd bin Thabit through another hasan chain in Ahmad (35/ 21618) and elsewhere.
Reference / Source: And the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) permitting Zayd bin Thabit (to take part) at the Khandaq is also narrated from Zayd through another route, in al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (4743), Abu Nu'aym's "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (2897) and Ibn Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" (19/ 312), via Isma'il bin Qays bin Sa'd bin Zayd bin Thabit, from his father, from Kharijah bin Zayd, from his father Zayd bin Thabit.
Grading: Isma'il is "munkar al-hadith".

Grading: It is da'if. Al-Waqidi is alone in narrating it with this wording without a chain. It is in his "al-Maghazi" (2/ 448 and 3/ 1003), and Ibn Sa'd transmitted it from him in "al-Tabaqat" (5/ 308-309).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The statement in the report that "the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade frightening a believer" is narrated from the hadith of Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, who said: The Companions of the Messenger of Allah told us that they were travelling with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey, and a man among them fell asleep. Some of them went and took his arrows, and when he woke up he was alarmed, and the people laughed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What are you laughing at?" They said: Nothing, except that we took this man's arrows and he was alarmed. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not lawful for a Muslim to frighten a Muslim." Ahmad (38/ 23064) and Abu Dawud (5004) narrated it with a "sahih chain".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And the statement "that his belongings be taken in jest or in earnest" is narrated from the hadith of Yazid Abu al-Sa'ib as a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in Ahmad (29/ 17940), Abu Dawud (5003) and al-Tirmidhi (2160); it will come with the author (al-Hakim) under number (6831), and its chain is also sahih.
