It is narrated from Asim bin Umar concerning the Companions between whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) established brotherhood from among the Muhajirun and the Ansar. Regarding Banu Hashim, he states that he (peace and blessings be upon him) established brotherhood between Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib and Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with them both).
Muhammad bin Umar states that Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) took part in the Battles of Badr and Uhud, and on the day of Uhud, when the people had scattered, he stood firm with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He pledged allegiance to him (peace and blessings be upon him) unto death, and that day he kept shooting arrows in defence of him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Supply Sahl with arrows, for he is sahl (that is, generous and gentle)." He also took part in the Battle of al-Khandaq and in all the battles alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he also took part in the Battle of Siffin with Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 21) from Muhammad bin Umar al-Waqidi with all three chains. Important point: Ibn Ishaq mentioned something contrary to this regarding the mu'akhat (bond of brotherhood). He says the mu'akhat was between the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself and Ali bin Abi Talib, as in "Sirat Ibn Hisham" (1/ 505): the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took Ali's hand and said: "This is my brother." Reference / Source: And in the hadith of Ali bin Abi Talib that has already passed under number (4685), he said: "By Allah! I am his (the Prophet's, peace and blessings be upon him) brother, his wali and his cousin." Its chain has some weakness (lin).
