It is narrated from Muhammad Ibn al-Hanafiyyah that he said: On the day of Siffin I saw Abu Amrah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), who had been present at Badr, at al-Aqabah and at Uhud. He was fasting and writhing, exhausted from the severity of thirst, and he was saying to his servant: Woe to you, shield me! So the servant kept shielding him. Then he shot an arrow, which fell a short distance away (because of weakness), until he had shot three arrows. Then he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever shoots an arrow in the path of Allah, whether it reaches (the target) or falls short, that arrow will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection." Then he was martyred before sunset.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for the weakness is that Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad bin Ubayd Allah al-Arzami is weak. Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (6906) via Abu Ali Muhammad bin Ahmad bin al-Hasan al-Sawwaf, from Muhammad bin Uthman bin Abi Shaybah, with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tabarani differed from Abu Ali al-Sawwaf and Ali bin Hamshadh in naming the Companion. He narrated this report in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (22/ 951) and named the Companion "Abu Amr al-Ansari". By his route Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "al-Ma'rifah" (6904) and Ibn al-Athir in "Usd al-Ghabah" (5/ 226-227). Important point: But the correct name is "Abu Amrah", as Ibn al-Athir said. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This hadith is also narrated marfu' from Abu Hurayrah, in al-Bazzar (9312), but its chain is weak. Grading: However, the hadith is authentically established with these words: "Whoever shoots an arrow in the path of Allah will have the equivalent of freeing a slave, and whoever's arrow reaches (its target) in the path of Allah will have a rank in Paradise." This narration preceded with the author (al-Hakim) at (2592) and (4419), from the hadith of Abu Najih Amr bin Abasah al-Sulami.
