It is narrated from Khaythamah bin Abi Sabrah al-Ju'fi that he said: I came to Madinah and asked Allah to grant me a righteous companion to sit with, and Allah made Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) available to me. I sat with him and said: I asked Allah for a righteous companion, and He brought me to you. He asked me: Where are you from? I said: From the land of Kufah; I have come seeking knowledge and goodness. He said: "Are there not among you Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Malik (Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas), whose supplication is answered; and Abdullah bin Mas'ud, who looked after the ablution water and the sandals of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); and Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman, the keeper of the secrets of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); and Ammar bin Yasir, to whom Allah granted protection from Satan upon the tongue of His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); and Salman (al-Farisi), the scholar of the two Books?" Qatadah said: The two Books mean the Injil (Gospel) and the Qur'an (al-Furqan).
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yahya bin Hakim is "al-Muqawwim al-Hafiz", and Khaythamah bin Abi Sabrah is Khaythamah bin Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Sabrah; here he has been attributed to his grandfather. Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (3811) recorded it via al-Jarrah bin Makhlad al-Basri from Mu'adh bin Hisham, with this same chain. Grading: And al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is "hasan sahih gharib". Note / Clarification: A similar narration has passed in abridged form at number (5468) from the hadith of Abu al-Darda', mentioning Ibn Mas'ud, Ammar and Hudhayfah.
