Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5745

It is narrated from Mus'ab bin Abdullah al-Zubayri that the lineage of Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) is as follows: Ammar bin Yasir bin Amir bin Malik bin Kinanah bin Qays bin al-Husayn bin al-Wadhim bin Tha'labah bin Awf bin Harithah bin Malik bin Ans bin Zayd.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In our manuscripts this name was corrupted to "Harim" (with the undotted letters ha' and ra'), whereas the correct form is "Wadhim" (with waw and the dotted dhal). It has been corrected from the books of genealogy, such as Ibn al-Kalbi's "Nasab Ma'add wa al-Yaman al-Kabir" (1/ 337) and Ibn Hajar's "al-Isabah" (4/ 575).

Note / Clarification: In our manuscripts this name was corrupted and written as "Amr"; it too has been corrected from the two sources mentioned above.

Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z), (S) and (B) this word has been miswritten as "Abs" (with the one-dotted ba'), whereas the correct form is "Ans" (with nun).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn al-Kalbi, in giving his lineage in "Nasab Ma'add wa al-Yaman al-Kabir" (1/ 337), differed from the text found here. He gave the lineage thus: Ammar bin Yasir bin Amir bin Malik bin Kinanah bin Qays bin al-Ju'ayd bin al-Wadhim bin Tha'labah bin Awf bin Harithah bin Amir al-Akbar bin Yam bin Ans. (Note: Yam is the brother of Malik.)
Reference / Source: Likewise Ibn Sa'd gave his lineage in "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 227), but he mentioned the name "al-Husayn" instead of "al-Ju'ayd", just as the name appears in the narration of Mus'ab al-Zubayri with the author (al-Hakim).
Reference / Source: Khalifah bin Khayyat in "al-Tabaqat" (pp. 21 and 75), al-Tabari in "Dhayl al-Mudhayyal" (as in its "Muntakhab" 11/ 508), and other historians also gave the lineage in the same way. All of them mentioned "al-Husayn" and all of them said "Yam bin Ans".
