Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This report is sahih, and this chain of it is hasan because of Muhammad bin al-Hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin al-Hasan is Ibn al-Zubayr al-Asadi; his son 'Umar is "saduq" (truthful) and there is no harm in his narration; he is in a better state than his father, and both of them are corroborated. Thabit is Thabit bin Aslam al-Bunani.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (2877) via Abu Hamid bin Jabalah with the chain of Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Thaqafi (al-Sarraj).
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in al-Tabaqat 3/ 169 from 'Affan bin Muslim; Abu Zur'ah al-Dimashqi in his Tarikh (p. 562), and through him Ibn 'Asakir at 19/ 420, from Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn. Also Ja'far bin Muhammad al-Firyabi in "al-Siyam" (126), and through him Ibn 'Asakir at 19/ 420, from Ibrahim bin al-Hajjaj; and Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (834) from Abd al-A'la bin Hammad; all four of them narrate from Hammad bin Salamah.
Details of the narration: The narrators other than Abu Nu'aym added the words "aw marad" (or illness).
Reference / Source: Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi narrated it in "al-Ja'diyyat" (1464) via Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, from Shu'bah, from Humayd and Thabit, from Anas, who said: Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) did not fast in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) because of his many campaigns; after him (peace and blessings be upon him) he fasted for forty years and never missed a day except the two 'Eids.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Apart from Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, a large group narrating from Shu'bah did not mention the words "forty years".
Reference / Source: These narrations include Sa'id bin Mansur (2424), al-Bukhari (2828), al-Bayhaqi 4/ 301, al-Bazzar (6853), Ibn 'Adi (al-Kamil 2/ 100), Ja'far al-Firyabi (127), al-Tabari (Tahdhib al-Athar 1/ 325), Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi (1361, 1464, 829), al-Tabarani (al-Kabir 4680) and Ibn Abd al-Barr (al-Isti'ab p. 245).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise, Ja'far bin Sulayman al-Duba'i narrated it from Thabit al-Bunani (Musannaf Abd al-Razzaq: 7870), and he too did not mention the phrase "forty years".
Details of the narration: A group of Humayd al-Tawil's students also narrated it without this addition.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (3/ 469), Ibn Abi Shaybah (3/ 7), Ahmad (12016, and al-Zuhd 1119), al-Firyabi, al-Tabari, al-Baghawi, al-Bayhaqi and Ibn 'Asakir transmitted it with this wording: "Abu Talhah used to fast often in the time of the Messenger, and after the Prophet's death he did not leave fasting except when travelling or ill".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Humayd al-Tawil's narration contradicts that of Thabit al-Bunani: Humayd mentions "frequent fasting", while Thabit mentions "not fasting". In some narrations from Thabit the words are "la yakadu yasum" (he hardly ever fasted).
