Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5591

It is narrated from Ibn Ishaq that he said: Abu Talhah Zayd bin Sahl bin al-Aswad bin Haram (may Allah be pleased with him) took part in the Battle of Badr. And it has reached me that he passed away during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) led his funeral prayer in the year thirty-three (33) AH.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Reference / Source: This narration is in Ibn 'Asakir ("Tarikh Dimashq", 19/ 393) and Ibn al-Athir ("Usd al-Ghabah", 5/ 181) via Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar. It is also in "Sirat Ibn Hisham" (1/ 457-458), from the narration of Ziyad bin Abd Allah al-Bakka'i from Muhammad bin Ishaq.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): That 'Uthman bin 'Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) led the funeral prayer over Abu Talhah was narrated by al-Waqidi from a group of the Successors (ahead at no. 5594). This is also the view of Ibn Numayr, Yahya bin Bukayr and al-Mada'ini.
Contradiction: This conflicts with the narration that will come from Anas at no. (5605), that Abu Talhah died on a sea expedition and, although no island could be found for seven days, his blessed body had not changed.

Note / Clarification: For reconciling this disagreement, see the remarks of the author (al-Hakim) there.
Important point: There is evidence that Abu Talhah died a considerable time after 'Uthman, as preferred by Ibn Abd al-Barr ("al-Tamhid", 21/ 192), Ibn al-Athir ("Usd al-Ghabah", 2/ 138) and Ibn Hajar ("al-Isabah", 2/ 608).
Evidence: According to the sahih narration of Anas (no. 5603), Abu Talhah fasted for 40 years after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), which shows that he died after 50 AH. This is also supported by the sahih narrations of Malik ("al-Muwatta'", 2/ 966), Ahmad (25/ 15979) and al-Tirmidhi (1750), since 'Ubayd Allah bin Abd Allah could not have heard from him during the time of 'Uthman; this proves that Abu Talhah died after 'Uthman.
Grading: On this basis, the narration of Anas that mentions his death at sea and burial on an island is "more authentic" (asahh) than the narration of his death in Medina with 'Uthman leading his funeral prayer.
