It is narrated from Abdullah bin al-Samit that he said: Umm Dharr (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "By Allah! Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) did not exile Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him); rather the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had said (to him): 'When the buildings (of Madinah) reach Sal' (hill), then leave it.'" Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said that when the buildings reached Sal' and went even beyond it, Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) left for Syria. And the narrator mentioned the rest of the long hadith.
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. The detailed hadith on this topic is that of al-A'mash, which he narrated from Abu Wa'il, from Hallam bin Jazl al-Ghifari; I have left it out because of some of its wording and also because of its length, and have confined myself to the two authentic chains.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This chain is hasan on account of Abu 'Amir Salih bin Rustum, for he is "hasan al-hadith" (his hadith is hasan). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Qilabah bin al-Raqashi: he is Abd al-Malik bin Muhammad. And the one who narrated the hadith to Umm Dharr is Abu Dharr himself, as is apparent from the context of the report, so it is not to be declared defective on account of irsal. Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/ 401) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this chain. Reference / Source: A similar narration was recorded by Ibn Abi Shaybah in his "Musnad" [as in Ibn Hajar's "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" 4338] and Ibn al-A'rabi in his "Mu'jam" (109) through the route of Badr bin Khalid al-Jarmi, from Abu Dharr. Grading: Its chain is "hasan", in sha' Allah. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the Musnad of Ibn Abi Shaybah the name "Badr" is corrupted into "Zayd". This is most likely an old corruption, because al-Dhahabi cited the report in "al-Siyar" (20/ 70) and named him "Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani", whereas he is "Badr bin Khalid al-Jarmi". Al-Bukhari recorded part of this report in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (2/ 138) in the biography of Badr bin Khalid, and al-Daraqutni likewise mentioned it in "al-'Ilal" (1097) and named him correctly. See also Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (2/ 412), where he gives the biography of Badr bin Khalid, stating that he narrated from Uthman and Abu Dharr, and that Abu al-Juwayriyah narrated from him. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in his "al-Thiqat". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for it is the mursal narration of Muhammad bin Sirin with Ibn Sa'd (4/ 212), Ibn Abi 'Umar al-'Adani in his "Musnad" [as in al-Busiri's "Ithaf al-Khiyarah" (4178)] and al-Khallal in "al-Sunnah" (50), and its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy). Note / Clarification: "Sal'": the name of a mountain near Madinah.
(8688). Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In manuscript (B) this name is corrupted into "Haram bin Jandal". It appears that the author (al-Hakim) meant the hadith, part of which he will record under number (8688).
