It is narrated from Mujahid that he said: Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said to a few people who were with him: "As you can see, the time of my death has drawn near. If I had a garment sufficient as a shroud for me or for my wife, I would be shrouded only in it. I adjure you that no man among you should shroud me who has been a chief of a people, a representative (naqib), a governor or a courier (a government official)." All those people were from among the notables; among them were Hujr al-Madari and Malik al-Ashtar, and with them was a man of the Ansar. Apart from the Ansari, every one of them had held one or another of those posts. So that Ansari said: "I will shroud you in this cloak of mine and in the two garments that are in my bag; they are made from yarn spun by my mother, and she wove them for me so that I might enter ihram in them." On hearing this Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "They are sufficient for me."

Grading: (2) This hadith is hasan, and the narrators of this chain are "la ba'sa bihim" (there is no harm in them), but it is mursal. Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is because Mujahid (Ibn Jabr al-Makki) did not reach Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (so there is a break). However, this report is narrated in connected form through another hasan route from Abd Allah bin 'Uthman bin Khuthaym, which will come with the author (al-Hakim) under number (5559). Za'idah: he is Ibn Qudamah. Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad [35/ (21467)] through the route of Wuhayb bin Khalid, from Abd Allah bin 'Uthman bin Khuthaym, from Mujahid, from Ibrahim bin al-Ashtar: "When death came near to Abu Dharr..." (and he mentioned something similar). Technical note / Defect ('illah): This too is likewise mursal, because Ibrahim (bin al-Ashtar) also did not reach Abu Dharr. Technical note / Defect ('illah): What occurs in Ibn al-Athir's "Usd al-Ghabah" (1/ 358), where Wuhayb bin Khalid's narration of this report is connected with the mention of al-Ashtar and the wife of Abu Dharr, is an error. This is because Ibn al-Athir narrates it from Abu Muhammad bin Abi al-Qasim bin 'Asakir, from his father (Ibn 'Asakir), with his chain up to Wuhayb bin Khalid in connected form, whereas Ibn 'Asakir narrated the report in "Tarikh Dimashq" (66/ 219-220) with this very chain up to Wuhayb, and did not take it beyond Ibrahim bin al-Ashtar, like the narration of Ahmad and others who narrated it through Wuhayb. So what is preserved (mahfuz) in his narration is that it does not go beyond Ibrahim bin al-Ashtar. Details of the narration: This narration will come under number (5559) through the route of Yahya bin Sulaym al-Ta'ifi, from Abd Allah bin 'Uthman bin Khuthaym, from Mujahid, from Ibrahim bin al-Ashtar, from his father, from Umm Dharr (the wife of Abu Dharr). Grading: Yahya bin Sulaym is "saduq hasan al-hadith" (truthful, his hadith is hasan), and a group of the leading hadith masters narrated this report from him in connected form. This report is not preserved in connected form from anyone other than him.
