Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5524

Abu Salih Dhakwan relates from Suhayb, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said: Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) sent me to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). I came to him and at that time he was feeding people the morning meal. I summoned him, and he came to him (Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Abu al-Fadl! May your face be successful and prosperous." He replied: "And your face too, O Commander of the Faithful!" Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The only delay was that when your messenger came to me I was feeding people; I fed them and then came (straight to you)."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) The text given in square brackets has dropped out of our manuscripts; we have supplied it from the other narrations of this report from Shu'bah. It may be that it dropped out with Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Rahman bin al-Hasan al-Qadi, for he was not a strong narrator. And Abu Salih Dhakwan al-Samman met neither al-'Abbas nor 'Uthman (i.e. his narration from them is disconnected).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) The manuscripts have "aflaha al-wujuh" (in the plural form), while the correct form is what we have established in agreement with the referenced sources (i.e. the singular).

Grading: (2) This chain can possibly be considered hasan because of Suhayb, the freed slave of al-'Abbas. Although no one narrated from him except Abu Salih Dhakwan al-Samman, he is a senior Tabi'i who narrates from al-'Abbas, 'Uthman and 'Ali; al-Bukhari recorded from him in "al-Adab al-Mufrad", Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", and al-Dhahabi in "al-Siyar" (2/ 94) declared this chain hasan in another report narrated with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibrahim bin al-Husayn is Ibn Dizil.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah (15/ 213), Abu Zur'ah al-Dimashqi in "al-Fawa'id al-Mu'allalah" (184) and Ibn 'Asakir (39/ 264) via Muhammad bin Ja'far Ghundar; by al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Awsat" (1/ 509) and Ibn 'Asakir (39/ 264-265 and 265) via Khalid bin al-Harith; by al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (4/ 21) via Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi; and by Ibn 'Asakir (39/ 264-265) via Mu'adh bin Mu'adh al-'Anbari. All four of them (Ghundar, Khalid, al-Tayalisi and Mu'adh) narrate it from Shu'bah with this same chain.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Khara'iti in "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (407), and through him by Ibn 'Asakir (39/ 263), from Ahmad bin Sahl al-'Askari, from Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Rishdin, from Yusuf bin 'Adi, from Abdullah bin 'Amr al-Raqqi, from al-A'mash, from Abu Salih Tahman, the freed slave of al-'Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib.
Grading: This chain is da'if because of the weakness of Ibn Rishdin.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Most likely he erred in the chain by making it from "Abu Salih Tahman, the freed slave of al-'Abbas", whereas it is from "Abu Salih Dhakwan al-Samman, from Suhayb the freed slave of al-'Abbas", as in the narration of 'Amr bin Murrah.
