Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5512

Sayyiduna Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Ali bin al-Husayn narrates from his father that he said: Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) came towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He was wearing a (fine) suit of clothes, his hair was in two braids, and his complexion was fair. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him, he smiled. Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! What made you laugh? May Allah always keep you laughing and smiling." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The handsomeness of the Prophet's uncle amazed me." Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "What is handsomeness in men?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The tongue (that is, sweet and eloquent speech)."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) In our manuscripts this name has been distorted into "Muhammad"; the correct name is taken from the other sources that reference the report.

Grading: (3) It can possibly be considered hasan on account of its supporting reports, if Allah wills.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is da'if because of the unknown status of al-Hakam bin al-Mundhir and 'Umar bin Bishr al-Khath'ami. Jabir al-Ju'fi corroborated them, but he too is weak. Moreover, the report is also mursal: all who recorded it apart from the author (al-Hakim) counted it among the mursal narrations of Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin 'Ali bin al-Husayn (Ibn 'Ali bin Abi Talib) and did not take it beyond him (to a Companion). And even if the mention of his father in the report were established, it would still remain mursal. In any case, this report has supporting reports which, combined with this mursal narration, can raise it to the level of hasan. And Allah the Exalted knows best.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad bin Hanbal in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1755), and through him by Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i in "al-Ghaylaniyyat" (265) and Ibn 'Asakir (26/ 345). Also al-Baladhuri narrated it in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (4/ 20) from Abu Hassan al-Ziyadi. Both of them (Ahmad and al-Ziyadi) narrate it from Musa bin Dawud al-Dabbi, from al-Hakam bin al-Mundhir, from 'Umar bin Bishr al-Khath'ami, from Abu Ja'far, as mursal.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But in "Ansab al-Ashraf" the name of al-Hakam bin al-Mundhir's shaykh appears as "'Umar al-Nakha'i"; it may be that "al-Nakha'i" is a distortion of "al-Khath'ami", and Allah knows best. Ibn 'Asakir (26/ 344-345) narrated it via Abdullah bin al-Husayn bin Jabir al-Massisi, from Musa bin Dawud, from 'Umar bin Bishr, from Abu Ja'far, as mursal, dropping al-Hakam bin al-Mundhir as an intermediary. About Abdullah bin al-Husayn, Ibn Hibban says that he used to invert reports and steal them. We say: what is mahfuz is the mention of al-Hakam bin al-Mundhir.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Rushayd al-Fihri in "Mil' al-'Aybah" (p. 294) via Jabir bin Yazid al-Ju'fi, from Abu Ja'far, as mursal.
Grading: And Jabir (al-Ju'fi) is da'if in hadith.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the hadith of Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), found in al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi's "Nawadir al-Usul" (1389), Abu Nu'aym's "Tarikh Asbahan" (2/ 86-87) and "Fada'il al-Khulafa'" (148), al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman" (4610) and Ibn 'Asakir (26/ 345).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, its chain contains Ayyub bin Sayyar al-Zuhri, who is weak.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise, a supporting report for it is the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), found with al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi (1390), but its chain contains Layth bin Abi Sulaym, who is "sayyi' al-hifz" (of poor memory).
