حدثنا الشيخ الإمام أبو بكر بن إسحاق وأبو بكر محمد بن أحمد بن بالوَيهِ في آخَرِين، قالوا: حدثنا عبد الله بن أحمد بن حنبل، حدثني يحيى بن مَعِين، حدثنا عُبيد بن أبي قُرَّة، حدثنا الليث بن سعد، عن أبي قَبِيل، عن أبي مَيسرة مولى العباس، قال: سمعتُ العباس يقول: كنتُ عند النبيِّ ﷺ ذاتَ ليلةٍ، فقال لي: "انظُرْ هل تَرى في السماءِ من شيءٍ؟ "، قلتُ: نعم، قال: "ما تَرى؟ " قلت: الثُّريّا، فقال: "أما إنه يَملِكُ هذه الأمَّةَ بِعَدَدِها من صُلْبِك" (1).
هذا حديث تَفَرَّد به عُبيد بن أبي قُرَّة عن الليث، وإمامنا أبو زكريا ﵀ (1) لو لم يَرْضَه لما حدَّث عنه بمِثل هذا الحديث.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: One night I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Look, do you see anything in the sky?" I said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What do you see?" I said: The Pleiades (a cluster of stars). At this he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Listen! Surely from your loins as many people as the number of (the stars of the Pleiades) will become rulers of this Ummah."
Ubayd bin Abi Qurrah is alone in narrating this hadith from al-Layth, and had our Imam Abu Zakariyya (may Allah have mercy on him) not approved of him, he would never have narrated such a hadith from him.

(1) منكرٌ وإسناده ضعيف لجهالة أبي ميسرة مولى العباس، فلا يُعرف إلا بهذا الحديث، ولم يرو عنه غير أبي قَبيل - وهو حُيَيّ بن هانئ المَعافري - وعُبيد بن أبي قرة قال البخاري في ترجمته في "تاريخه الكبير" 6/ 2: لا يتابع في حديث في قصة العباس، وقال العقيلي في "الضعفاء الكبير" 2/ 610: حديثه غير محفوظ ولا يُعرف إلّا به، وقال ابن عدي 5/ 350: أُنكرَ عليه حديث العباس، وقال الذهبي في "تلخيص المستدرك": لم يَصحَّ هذا، وقال في "تاريخ الإسلام" 5/ 120: هو منكر، وقال في "الميزان" 3/ 22: هذا باطل، وقال في "المغني في الضعفاء" (3973): خبر ساقط.
Grading: This narration is "munkar" and its chain is "da'if".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The cause of weakness is the unknown status (jahalah) of "Abu Maysarah, the freed slave of al-'Abbas"; he is known only through this hadith, and no one narrated from him except Abu Qabil (who is Huyayy bin Hani' al-Ma'afiri). This chain also contains "'Ubayd bin Abi Qurrah".
Statements of the imams (criticism): Imam al-Bukhari said in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" 6/ 2, in the biography of 'Ubayd: "He is not corroborated in a hadith about the story of al-'Abbas." Al-'Uqayli said in "al-Du'afa' al-Kabir" 2/ 610: "His hadith is not mahfuz, and he is known only through it." Ibn 'Adi said in 5/ 350: "The hadith of al-'Abbas was objected to (as munkar) against him." Al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi said in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak": "This is not authentic"; in "Tarikh al-Islam" 5/ 120: "It is munkar"; in "al-Mizan" 3/ 22: "This is false (batil)"; and in "al-Mughni fi al-Du'afa'" (3973): "A worthless (saqit) report."
وقد أشار أبو حاتم الرازي فيما نقله عنه ابنه في "العلل" (2716) إلى تفرد عُبيد بن أبي قرة به عن الليث بن سعد، فقال: لم يرو هذا الحديث غير عبيد، وعُبيد صدوق، ولم يكن عند أبي صالح هذا الحديثُ.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam Abu Hatim al-Razi, as his son quoted from him in "al-'Ilal" (2716), indicated that "'Ubayd bin Abi Qurrah" is alone in narrating this from al-Layth bin Sa'd. He said: "No one narrated this hadith except 'Ubayd; 'Ubayd is saduq, but (al-Layth's scribe) Abu Salih did not have this hadith."
وأخرجه البيهقي في "دلائل النبوة" 6/ 518 عن أبي عبد الله الحاكم، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 6/ 518 from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim with this same chain.
وأخرجه ضياء الدين المقدسي في "المختارة" 8/ (476) من طريق سليمان بن أحمد الطبراني، عن عبد الله بن أحمد بن حنبل به. وأخرجه ابن أبي خيثمة في "تاريخه" كما في "جامع الآثار" لابن ناصر الدين 4/ 466، ومن طريقه ابن الأبّار القُضاعي في "معجم أصحاب أبي علي الصَّدفي" ص 138 عن يحيى بن معين، به.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Diya' al-Din al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" 8/ (476) via Sulayman bin Ahmad al-Tabarani, from Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal, with this same chain. Also Ibn Abi Khaythamah narrated it in his "Tarikh" (as found in Ibn Nasir al-Din's "Jami' al-Athar" 4/ 466), and through him Ibn al-Abbar al-Quda'i in "Mu'jam Ashab Abi 'Ali al-Sadafi" p. 138, from Yahya bin Ma'in with this same chain.
وأخرجه أحمد 3/ (1786) عن عُبيد بن أبي قُرة، به.
